joelgodin
Hi Ya'll. New here so don't shoot me, but I use Blender and was wondering why there is no Blender header under 3D software?
andstef
I don't think it's that popular in the design/architecture/visualization industry. I tried to learn blender several times (because it's free), when I was a architecture student, and again last year, but after spending two hours without finding out how to draw a straight line I gave up. joelgodin
Well, you're not looking in the right place. There are a ton of free tutorials out there. I've created several myself, not to mention places like BlenderCookie and BlenderGuru. There's also more and more Architectural tutorials like this excellent one from BlenderPedia I'd check it again as the new Cycles path-tracing renderer gives awesome results. rafaellopez
I will agree with Joel, there are a lot of tutorials available fro Blender. I have been working on other 3d applications as Blender and Lightwave 3d now, in a sense looking for a alternative to 3dsmax, the cost every year to upgrade , plus plugin needed for certain things, have left me looking in other directions. BlenderGuru is awesome, and their are some great links to on their site. check this link http://forums.cgarchitect.com/73062-rainy-street-call-crits.html#post373504
andstef
I saw the image in that thread and I was quite impressed by it's quality (I also commented in that thread), especially by the fact that it was created using free software. Joel, i saw the tutorial that you posted - is it just me, or nobody uses snap in blender? I guess this is another aspect that annoys me ,probably because I'm a little obsessed with aligning things in 3d, I use autocad and 3ds max and I hardly ever "eyeball" thing, I usually use numerical input. I guess I have mixed feelings towards Blender.
joelgodin
I agree Andrei. There seems to be a divide between 'Artists' who bang their way into a great render, and the 'techies' who model precisely and use all tools efficiently and correctly. Snap is the correct way as you mention. Here's another vid on Cycles as real time rendering in Architectural visualization:
David Crawford
I just joined the ArchitecureAcademy at BlenderGuru.com, check it out! http://www.thearchitectureacademy.com/sp/21229-buy-now Also, I agree with the precision and snapping. But since you already have AutoCAD, just model there and do the rest in Blender.
Tella
You can also do precise modeling in Blender. Snaps, numerical input, align, calliper... are already in blender to use. Things are not done the same way as in 3dsmax but Blender is very powerful and fast.
