Description:

Hello everyone.

This is my first post, hope you like it. Just finished a training course in V-Ray, and as final project we had to choose one building to recreate it from zero. I could have chosen a easier one... but we all like challenges :p. These are the Law Courts in Barcelona (1888-1911) from architect Enric Sagnier.

These are my first wip images, now I'm working in texturing and mapping.

All comments will be appreciated!

Thank you.

Thank you for your comments.

I'm texturing and mapping the interior, and posting 2 images of the process. They're in low quality, and you'll notice that some objects still don't have materials. Also, I've hidden some objects (columns, banisters...) to have good testing render times.

Please, comment on them so I can improve my wotk! Thank you all.

Those are looking nice with the textures coming along. This might be a good opportunity to play with Vray Fog and get some sun rays casting through the space. Of course if the real skylights don't allow direct light and you're going for "true" accuracy then don't worry about it.

Nice work!

Hello, and thank you all for your comments.

I'm trying to achieve a realistic image, so although it would be nice to use vrayfog, maybe as Dan said not the best idea...

These images are still low quality, with no postproduction. And there are still some object without materials applied.

Feel free to point out anything you see out of place!

Jaume

Hello Travis.

Now I'm using a dome light with a HDRI map for general illumination, and vray sphere lights inside the pendants for the warm lights in the corridors.

All the lights have low shadows subdivions (16 the dome, 8 the rest) to have fast rendering times, also render quality is really low (GI and antialiasing). Hope shadows details will get better when I tune them up.

From reference photos and visits to the place, I prefer maintining the artificial light level, to have contrast between warm/cool lights. In postproduction I was thinking of tweaking contrast to focus the central area.

Thanks for your reply!

the model detail looks good but you are losing a lot with the materials and scene lighting resulting in rather flat looking images which lack impact.

Striving for realism (since you have visted the location) is great and all but it isn't what clients are buying. You may want to consider thinking more like a set designer/photographer and light the scene to bring out visual interest in the scene. HDRI may not be your best option for the interiors in this case.

Hello John, and thank you for your comment.

You're right, as I've been putting materials, the image is getting "flatter"...

The problem is that I would not like to change the lightning, as is my best approach to my photo references. I'll explain this: the idea of this project is trying to recreate the building, not only from reality, but also trying to achieve the look of some photographs by Candida Hofer. Here's a link to one of them:

I know is a bit strange as starting point... but my challenge was that :D

(and also, my vray knowledge is still very limited to try many more lightning setups... :p)

So... I'm trying to achieve more visual impact by postproduction.

I've been toying a little in photoshop with the images I posted earlier, not sure if I overworked them... please, let me know.

And once again, thank you for your comment, is really great to have opinions from more experienced users!

wow, these look great! Only thing that you could do for a quick improvement would be to add some building lighting on the night exterior. Municipal building like this tend to have lighting on the exterior to show off the architecture at night.

I'm trying to do something similar, focusing on exterior right now. Also limited vray knowledge but still need to meet deadline. Are you using dome light with HDRI for the exterior? Also great modeling detail. Did you model that all in max? I wish there were tutorials to model this kind of detail. If you can do that, you can do anything. Congrats.
