Chris MacDonald
Honestly, I wouldn't call that "good shot" a good shot at all - I can spot lots of things wrong with it. Firstly you need to focus on making your materials far more believable. I can't see a single material with any kind of reflection in your scene; almost every material in real life has some kind of reflectivity, even if it's only a little - and for realism, look into fresnel reflections. I find the glass to be particularly off-putting, on three counts; You can't see through it, you can't see any reflections and it's just the wrong colour for glass. For a basic starting point for photoreal glass set the following; Diffuse - Black Reflection - White Refraction - White Tick Fresnel Reflections Tick Affect Shadows Set ior to around 1.5 or slightly higher (upto 1.8) for really reflective glass. Actually, there's too much wrong with it for me to go on writing it up like this. Just look for reference photographs of each material that you are setting up and try to mimic what you see. oluwapelumiajeigbe
Thank You Chris! What about my render settings and camera settings any advice? Cheers!
Chris MacDonald
Well, the VRay camera is the same setup as a real-world camera - So whatever works best given the lighting setup.
notamondayfan
Why are you trying to copy a less than average CG shot? You'd be better off looking a real photography, as all you are doing is aiming for mediocrity, rather than something nice. As mentioned above, render settings and camera settings are far less important than good models, materials, lighting and composition. The render settings are there to control the render quality (noise, GI and AA) and speed, not the quality of the project.

John Dollus
The render settings are there to control the render quality (noise, GI and AA) and speed, not the quality of the project. such a simple statement and so difficult to grasp for some.
