danb4026
Currently have an MSI P67-GD65 1155 MB with an i7 2600K processor. I want to upgrade my processor for faster rendering and would prefer to keep the motherboard and the rest of my configuration if possible. I have a GTX 580, 32gb ram, and a 64bit OS. Is there a processor that would give me significant improvements while keeping everything else? If the allowable processor upgrade is not worth doing with my current config, I would consider swapping out my MB for an LGA 2011. If I do have to do that, will I have to change my memory, video card, power supply etc? Thx
gipper51
You're at the end of the line, unfortunately. The only CPU you can upgrade to is the Ivy Bridge 3770K, which is 10-15% faster at best, and in most cases less. Not worth it in my opinion. Right now the only meaningful upgrade is to go with a 6 core LGA 2011 setup. Your RAM and video card will transfer fine. You might need a new power supply unless you bought a big one...Sandy Bridge E draws a lot of power. Probably want 700+ watts for a 2011 system. Consider overclocking also, SB-E will typically run just fine at 4.3-4.5ghz but you will need good cooling. I'd look at a water cooling setup for this, good ones can be had for about $100. Francisco Penaloza
Yep you are pretty much at the top already, overclock is always a good option if you want more juice from your CPU but you'll need a better fan and see how far you MB will go. 4.5Ghz is a good speed for a 2600K. If you need faster rendering time, I would recommend build or get an extra PC, if you use VRAY you can do distribute bucket rendering, works fine and You'll see a good improvement. now if you want to grow in your workstation, you'll need to look in those dual Xeons PC's at my office we have dual 6 cores DELLs HT that is 24 cores in total, they work great but it is some serious investment. Jason Matthews
I agree. Stick with the system you have and build a render node. I would suggest another 2500k or the third gen version.
