kirthaymore
Hi everyone! I am completely new to the Architectural Visualization world, and at a not so good time for growth, I would like to get into the industry. I love architectural renderings and I have been working to better my skills in that area. My question is more towards the best way to get noticed and make connections so I can get into the business. I have attempted to make some local connections here in Arizona, United States, with not too much luck. It is better to walk into render studios (if not home based) or architectural firms than email contact? Any advise that anyone could offer up would be much appreciated. Thank you. Jason Matthews
I don't think there is a proper way to do things. I would start by having an online portfolio. Then create a digital flyer to email to prospective clients (architects, interior designers, developers, real estate agents, and property management companies). Email the flyer to the attention of a particular person not to the general mailbox (ex. info@somecompany.com). Mayybe show examples of pricing and turnaround time. That is what sets you apart from others.
kirthaymore
Thank you Jason for your feedback! I am not sure I am ready to venture out on my own yet but if the opportunity comes I may try it out. I have zero experience in the industry so I think an in-house job would be beneficial so I can learn more. However, I find your advise valid and I love the digital flyer idea. I have an online portfolio at http://kirthaymore.com/ and I would like to know what you think. Again thank you for your feedback and your time. unrinoceronte
I can tell you that in my case, the way i got into this business is that i started working as a frelancer with a few YOUNG architects that i knew... i developed my skills and they where satisfied, given me more and more jobs... each year, my client list grew, they recommended me with their own clients, friends, etc... almost 10 years now, and i have never had to knock doors at new clients... Luckily they come to me by recommendations... I don´t send emails either... but i thing Jason recommendations are very good in case your scenario is different than mine... Also i can advice you to try do some work helping out some friends of school, you might not get paid a lot, or even at all.. but if you do a good job, they will take you in account when something comes up, and also they can recommend you to people they know... I am not saying you should work for free... but if you have some spare time, and you want to make more possibilites of connections for yourself.. this could help.. and you also help others in the way... Of course, also you can take 3D rendering courses, get better skills, and start posting your work, or make it more publicly available to people,.. that way someone can contact you specifically by your skills... I think once you get one good client, and is a client like an architect or developer who is goiong to always have new projects... you are good to go.. of course as long as you make a GREAT job... Word of mouth is very powerfull in this environment.... Market yourself also... nothing to loose... But be clear on your fees, time, and scope of work that you can do for your clients before hand in a meeting... Be confident.
