Terri Brown
Hi everyone, I need to create a shader for a light box similar to the ones in the following image: any tips?? I've started with a VRay mat with self-illum and translucency on (would you put a falloff map on one of them to create the darker less-lit edges?). And would you recommend placing an actual light within the box, or relying on the material alone for illumination? Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated! thanks
Chris MacDonald
I'd use a VRaylight inside the box, or whatever and use a simple VRaymaterial within a VRay2sidedmaterial. It's by far the quickest and easiest way to simulate this effect. Just a quick google image search for "Vray 2 sided" throws up the exact kind of things you're looking for... http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/150SP1/examples_vray2sided.htm
cg_Butler
I did this recently for some small cube box seats that were internally lit. I used a standard Vray material with really blurry translucency, spherical vray light inside and they looked great. Took quite a while to render though, but worth the wait. andstef
i'm working on a similar project, i'm designing a lamp made out of sandblasted glass (or a similar material) and for the first time used the method described above by Andy, and the render time was unacceptably long, so I did the following: I modeled a "shell" around the lamp's body, 0.01mm larger, inverted the normals so they pointed inside, unwrapped UVW, assigned a white material, and rendered to texture. I used the texture inside a vray light material assigned to the "shell" only this time I placed the "shell" inside the lamp, just behind the glass (this time clear). The difference was imperceptible. There is a tutorial on evermotion.org about baking textures. I hope this helps, Good luck!
Terri Brown
wow thanks guys - will try the above. Just a question though: if i use the vray2sided mat, for the vray mtl plugged into my frontMtl slot - should i make it slightly transparent (bring up my refraction clr), or is it unneccessary? i've been using mental ray for 10 years, so the Vray Mtls are new to me! Chris MacDonald
You don't have to use transparent to be able to see the light from the back side.
