notamondayfan
Well I've downloaded and installed Max Design 2014! I thought about waiting as usual a few months to see if any bugs appear, but this time I've decided to give it a go straight away, mainly because I think there are some nice new features, but also because I'm between projects at the moment, so it makes sense to make the change now rather than in a couple of months time, halfway through a job! Anyway, first impressions are good. I've installed scripts and plugins. The ones I use are... Vray 2.4, Ard Scripts, Relink Bitmaps, Windows Box, Wireframe V2, Mass Randomiser, Soulburn Scripts, Forest Pack Pro 3, Cleaner, Vray Material Controller, Multitexture, Floor Generator, MB Resource Collector. The only one that doesn't seem to work is the Rock Generator script, but as it's working on 2013, it's not such a problem for me. For scripts like Forest Pack Pro, and Vray, I had to manually change the install location, but they work fine. I need to get my hands dirty with it now, and see what happens in a production environment! I'll let you know how I get on! Cheers, Dean
Paul Twyman
Just been having a play around with it. Populate will definitely be useful for longer distance aerial type stuff. Is it me or is the isolate shortcut (Shift Q) broke though? Can isolate but not un-isolate have to use the icon!!
notamondayfan
Umm interesting. I don't know if it's a bug or a design change, but I'm getting the same behaviour. In the manual it looks like Autodesk have changed how the isolate works, as now we have "end isolation" and "isolate unselected". Also the behaviour has changed for the isolate. If you select a group of objects, go into isolation mode, then select a few objects from the origional selection, it goes into isolation mode with the new selection. This is kind of the behaviour we saw in Max 2012, and was changed in Max 2013, so it seems that Autodesk have reverted back to its old behaviour, and simply left the large "Exit Isolation" button (Max 2012) in replace of the light bulb button. What I have just done to get around this is to map Ctrl+Alt+Q to "End Isolation" and it seems to work well. I can see why Autodesk have reverted to this behaviour, as I never personally liked using Alt+Q to control both Enter and Exit Isolation.
alexjupp
been using it last couple of days and it definitely is snappier than 2013 and have not had any crashes yet. i really like the active type (x) alot. the only glitches i've noticed so far are with nitrous. with mesh objects and with a object with shell the hidden lines show up in wireframe display and sometimes when selecting them. also with splines in segment and spline sub-object the lines disappear. Paul Twyman
See what you mean, will prob add Ctrl+Alt+Q like you say but I quite like the 2013 way, find it really quick being a toggle with one shortcut. If you wanted isolate part of your current isolation all you had to do was select the new and double press the shortcut keys and it would un-isolate then go straight back to your new isolation really quick. Now my lazy fingers have to move more! I'm sure I'll get used to it though, just in time for next years method Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Bruce Hart
I have the aaRockGen - 1.0 script on mine for rocks. Seems to work fine. Like yourself I have decided to go with 2014. Just sick of that 2013 isolate mode and throwing you out of camera view
Dave Buckley
Installed yesterday, yet to test it out. However the best feature for me is being able to interupt the Autosave I normally turn it off as it drives me mad, but now I can just press ESC if needed when it kicks in. It's the small things ... notamondayfan
Yea that does sounds good Dave, best of both worlds. There's nothing worse than working on a massive file, and autosave kicking in! Also another nice tweak is being able to turn off caddies, and also for the Tab button to work properly inside the dialogue / caddies boxes :-) It certainly is the small things :-)
Redballoon
Hi Companion Cube. I'm having the same issue with the spline segment and spline lines disappearing when selected. What graphic's card are you using? Josef Wienerroither
It was found ( i think even by compainioncube ) that this is a general problem for splines that have backface culling enabled in the object properties. So disable BF culling on the spline and the problem goes away. Nowadays, BF culling only should be used temporarily when you want to have less viewport clutter, because it's one of the top viewport performance killers when any sort of wireframe display is active... Redballoon
Thanks Spacefrog. It's Redballoon here. Only just realized that my post had been verified today. Thank for posting the backface cull fix. :-)
Devin Johnston
Any ideas when they'll release the first service pack? Has anyone else noticed Autodesk's site is all messed up?
notamondayfan
The spline thing was annoying me too, thanks for pointing out the backface cull work-around! Let's hope this is fixed in the first service pack! Dean
jfgiroux
Looks like there is some hope with 2014 ... Any of you tried the state sets? Is the feature more stable that in the previous version?
Patric Verstraete
hi Dean, did you find a new version for MultiTexture, it don't work with me on max 2014 version? Thx Pat
notamondayfan
hi Dean, did you find a new version for MultiTexture, it don't work with me on max 2014 version? Thx Pat It's always worked for me, no problems using the existing version. Have you installed it into the plug-in folder?
Patric Verstraete
Many thanks Dean, of course in the plugin folder:))
jfgiroux
Hi all .... just wanted to share my own experience with max 2014 (SP1 installed).. earlier i asked about state sets ... well, they (autodesk) did it again. It's hard to believe but they made the state stes even more unstable, now when i open a max2013 scene in 2014 i have to redo all the state sets because if i try to change any kind of setting (with the record button on) it dosen't record anything ... i complained to autodesk but i'm still waiting for their excuse. The other wonderful thing they did is take out the ''Output Gamma'' for bitmaps in the Gamma/Lut menu ... i'm rendering tons of pngs with transparancy, it now applies the gamma 2.2 a second time when saving the image ... dosen't do the same thing if i save to jpeg. so, thank you Autodesk ... again
RyderSK
The glorious new "auto-gamma" pissed me off too :- ) Some plugins can internally change the gamma numbers (for example SolidRocks), but you manually can't, not inside 3dsMax now. I didn't noticed SolidRocks changed it (I used 3.0 gamma with Vray in some scenes for better sampling) and then Max then automatically assumed this ratio for loaded maps in all other scenes too. Made such a mess until I noticed it. I understand they wanted to make the life easier, but they do not need to automatically just make it dissappear. beestee
I really like the way the new version handles HDR's with Mental Ray, but I found an annoying bug with it. It will not render the lighting correctly if you use an orthographic view. Also, the matte shadow material does not seem to work right with HDR lighting and Mental Ray. Guest Jason Smith
i just updated from max 2012 to 2014, and am happy so far. everything is more stable and the slate material editor isnt as slow. Im sure this is old news by now, but all the comments at the top of the post regarding isolate/ unisolate. the unisolate box is replaced with an option in the top right quad. i actually find this rather handy as i was always moving the box around when it got in the way. the gamma issue is a pain, i ran across this solution at CG Blog as for plugins, i dont seem to be able to get any of the amazing cg-source plug-ins to work... cheers, J
