notamondayfan
when you say "struggling with rendering huge scenes" what do you mean exactly? Are you talking just about render times, or are you having problems with loading, crashing, etc? If it's just render times, then you could look to either upgrade your CPU to a faster chip, or build an additional render slave. Render times are mainly dictated by CPU power. andstef
buy more machines set up render farm, the more the faster

cg_Butler
It sounds to me like you are running out of RAM..... Presumably you are on a 64-bit version of windows and 3dsmax? The first thing you should change is your dynamic memory limit. Crank it up from the default 400MB to something like 4000MB, if it still crashes then you can put it even higher. If it still crashes then you need to start tweaking the tree depth and leaf size in the system parameters to force your machine to use less RAM, but at the expense of higher render times.. Chen your Dynamic memory limit setting first though

I would doubt it was a RAM issue, unless you have some faulty RAM causing it to crash. If the dynamic memory was too low you'd just get longer render times. Does the render crash at the same point during the render? If so which part is it? To me it sounds like either something is missing or currupt within the file. Chris MacDonald
Whilst I've never experienced it with VRay, this is exactly what used to happen with mental ray when it hit the ram limit. Crash, no error messages. Used to drive me up the f*cking wall. Never had it happen with VRay though, it usually just unloads geometry when it hits the ram limit. notamondayfan
Vray, along with Windows 64, will unload the ram onto a scratch disc (harddrive) when the RAM is full. It is slow, but stops crashes in these instances.
