spanish pants
Hi all, I´ve run into a problem. I was sent a .max file of a chandelier by a client to be used in some renderings i´m working on for him. When i tried to open it i get the following message, and the file doesn´t open. "The file was created using a Student Version of 3ds max. Use of this data by an educational institution or for commercial purposes is a violation..." I´ve never gotten this message in all the time i´ve been doing 3d. I´ve tried importing as separate elements but it doesn´t work either. Has anyone else had this happen? Is there a solution? Thanks!
Scott Schroeder
Yeah, your client is a shady person. I'd turn their asses into Autodesk. It is illegal to use the student version for commercial purposes, since you can buy the student version for a fraction of the cost of the commercial one. Though I've never seen it not open the file before. I'll get that message when I grade student's homework at home on my commercial version of Max but I can still open the file. Are you both on the same versions of Max?
spanish pants
Thanks for the response! Acutally, the file was sent to him by a well known sculptor whos name i will withhold. My client wants to see the piece in the space before he decides to have it commissioned. I´ve asked him to contact the original artist to see if he can deal with file, but i find it frustrating to have to deal with this sort of thing when deadlines are tight. BTW, i´m using 2012. I´m not sure of what version he is using, but i will ask. Edited May 23, 2013 by spanish pants
christofferthulin
I got this message alot back in school, but just as a warning, could still open the file. What happens after you open the file? Are you sure there is no hidden geometry or whatever? Or does max just close itself?

I looked for hidden geometry, super scaled geometry or geometry that was microscopic, as well as looking in the scene list, but there's nothing there. John Dollus
If they have found a way to prevent actually opening/importing the student edition file, then I applaud autodesk for this move. Have your client tell the sculptor that he needs to provide an image from the viewpoint matching the background/scene you will be using and just drop that in.
