Subdivision - help

I downloaded a model and I have been studying it.

I notice that the mesh is relatively simple, however whomever modeled this increased the subdivision count when he/she needed more articulation.

In my workflow I often myself needed to so this, specially if I am want to use displacement maps etc.

Can someone please point me in the right direction?

My base models are Revit based most of the time FBX during schematic design. But I am open to part from FBX in DD for instance.

I have tried the "subdivide" modifier but it does the entire object...

no, in the picture I posted it seems like they just added more detail so selected areas where they needed the additional faces.

That is what I would like to know how to do. Also their added faces are quads and not triangles. Turbosmooth will add faces to the entire model.

Here is another example, I borrowed it from this forum.

OK I understand now.

In the first picture I'd guess that the origional mesh is quite low in detail / polys, and the artist added cuts and folds and extra details to the areas you highlighted, then added a turbosmooth / meshsmooth after wards, adding extra detail all over the model, but as the origional mesh had extra detail in the folds then it appears this way.

In the second image, when you have your mesh selected, go to subobject mode, faces, and whilst this is open apply a subdivide modifier. The modifier will only work on the selected faces.
