roangutierrez
Hi, im trying to render my model (please kindly see image attachment), and as soon as "building light cache" reach after several minutes, 3ds max suddenly closes.. I've already made my vray settings into the lowest possible that can fit my model.. still the same thing happens.. Is my model that heavy already? Im not using any displacement modifiers, HDRI.. My materials are just plain vray dirtmaps/bitmaps.. What do you think has caused the problem? Is it because of RAM? My laptop only has 3gb ram installed.. win7.. I know thats very unfortunate of me.. I've rendered several interiors already and it did fine, this is my first exterior render.. and its not working well.. Please do help me.. PLEASE. Scott Schroeder
Was there really a need to create three exact threads? http://forums.cgarchitect.com/73770-3ds-max-closes-when-vray-starts-rendering.html#post377224 http://forums.cgarchitect.com/73771-3ds-max-closes-when-vray-starts-rendering.html#post377225 Yes, you are probably running out of RAM. You can check on this by having the task manager open and watch your RAM max out. 3.5 million polys on only 3 gigs of RAM is very low, considering windows 7 is taking up at least a gig to run and max itself is another easy half gig of RAM just to run. Do you have instanced geometry or not? Are you running Windows Aero? If you turn that off you can save on some RAM. Dimitris Tolios
Rendering the image directly to Vray RAW (.exr is easy to work with directly in PS, .vrimg is not but there is a converter) will also save you most of the RAM used by VRay buffer window itself. roangutierrez
about the other threads, i was really worried if the thread will get noticed.. and it was my first time to post here so Im just trying it out.. Yes i do have instanced geometry(does it largely affect the memory used?) .. im still working out my modelling skills(i still consider myself as newbie) , I think I used wrong methods that made my model into 3.5mil polys.. those railings are made out of cylinders.. and i have booleaned my walls to follow that curved roof.. I wish I could learn how to properly model this again. thank you so much for all the replies.

abhaysingh
Did you check your RAM usage ? Just check in task manager OR in the 3ds max "rendering progress" window. In the bottom of rendering progress window there is "Memory" usage. If RAM is under 3 gb which i doubt, then try to render with "override material" to rule out any issues related to materials. You can find "override material" in "global switches" tab of vray render settings.Drag and drop a default vray material from material editor into "override material" slot & render. If you dont understand override mat method then just apply a default grey vray material to whole scene & then render.Iam asking you to check by this method because raytrace map or any unsupported material closes 3ds max without warning while calculating light cache while RAM issue gives you "Unhandled exception" error. Let me know the results.
roangutierrez
I havent tried to use override materials sir.. but i've already made changes on my model and fortunately i've reduced the poly count down to 1.5 mil.. but I have a new problem.. I attached a new image, and you can see there that my railings/bamboo poles doesnt render well when its not isolated from the rest of the model parts.. Those poles are just cylinders converted to poly.. I tried putting normal modifiers to flip its normals, but still it renders as black.. Im just using a target direct light for the scene.. Everything renders well except for this parts.. Suggestions sir? Edited June 15, 2013 by roangutierrez
