Mapping Topography Image onto 3D Topo Surface

I am having trouble mapping a 2d topography image properly onto my 3d topo surface. What I need to do is 'project' the image rather than 'wrap' it. There seems to be a slight scale issue as well. I have tried the various UVW Map modifiers in 3ds Max with no luck so far. I can get it close... but not exact.

The geometry is topography generated in Revit from a civil dwg file.

The red lines in the attached image are alignment references. They should be aligned as that is the location of the street on the geometry.

Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks. That's what I thought too but something strange is happening. Planar mapping generated what you see in the screen shot above. I tried uvwunwarp with a similar result.

I tried to simulate the issue but applying the same map to other surfaces but those all mapped correctly... so I'm not sure what is causing this to happen.

Ok I am confused, what do you mean generated ? You applied UVW map and it was supposed to be correct out of the box ? Why don't you scale it inside the modifier then ? You can also apply xForm to mesh (and optionally merge down stack) and then map it again. But I really don't see any issue.

Juraj - The surface isn't behaving how it is supposed to which is why I am asking this question. Even when scaled and rotated it does not fit the geometry. I have tried resetting the x-form and reapplying the map.

Jose - I will crop the map to match the geometry and give it another try.

If you have 3DS max design you can use Civil view to accurately place and scale a topography image onto a mesh. If you don't have a world file you can create one using Autodesk raster design. You should be able to download a trial.

A world file is a text file that defines the coordinates and size of the image
