dsp_418
In 3ds Max I'm using a VRay HDRI material, mapped to Spherical. I need to blur the map, it works if I use a simple Bitmap Map, but not with VRay HDRI. Is there a way to blur it? TIA
Dave Buckley
Photoshop?
Corey Beaulieu
I second the Photoshop.... But you can also use the Mapping Type 3DS Max Standard and then scroll down and use the parameters in the Coordinates menu.

I'm not a big fan of the Photoshop option, that would mean create a modified version of the original map just to blur it. The coordinates menu you're referring to, is actually the Blur option? Because I've tried that and it doesn't work.
Corey Beaulieu
You need to adjust the Blur Amount.
grzegorzwronkowski
use sibl edit software
dsp_418
You need to adjust the Blur Amount. Did it, is not working.
grzegorzwronkowski
First scale it down to max 8000px. It works really well. My hdri maps at hdrmaps.com
notamondayfan
Did it, is not working. Again, Photoshop, done. Just don't overwrite the original!
grzegorzwronkowski
Photoshop ? It can produce wrapping problems - I don't recommend it. In sibl-edit try to scale it down to 8000px before you go, and don't use any alpha, beta versions of this soft.
Jonathan
Definitely Photoshop and not in Max. Scale and blur. This is for animation right?
dsp_418
I didn't get the chance to try sIBL yet, hopefully I will soon. Really, PS? I mean, this is the scenario. You've got lot of HDR maps you wanna check to see if they work fine with the reflection. You wanna tweak the blur, as less or more blur can make the difference. You really go to PS, tweak each image, probably at least two times each just to see how the blur is working in the reflection? And you do that on 10-20 maps? If VRay HDRI material can't handle it, I'll give up. But if there's a workaround that's a different story. And for now I've found a workaround, is not 100% the same thing, but it's working. I've mapped a VRay material to a Sphere, now I can control the blur and check as many maps as I want. Hoped for a cleaner solution though.
Stephen Thomas
No material editor option unfortunately. And I'm also against the Photoshop option as it won't work across the horizontal join. Use sIBL or HDRShop.
grzegorzwronkowski
There is also plugin package called Banty's Toolkit for Picturenaut (sorry Mac funboys it works only on PC) which works great, it has nearly all functionalities of HDRShop and it's free! Have a look it is called Diffuse SH http://www.hdrlabs.com/picturenaut/plugins.html Edited July 12, 2013 by grzegorzwronkowski
