Zdravko Barisic
I have to make something like this Uploaded with ImageShack.com With standard geosphere, and shere, I did not make more than this Uploaded with ImageShack.com The Goal is: How to make that horizontal lines STAY horizontal, as on the first image??? Thanks!!!
cg_Butler
Easy. Use a geosphere. Add an edit Poly and in a front or side viewport select the vertices along one of the wonky edges and scale it in the y axis. HERE is an example maxfile saved in 2012. If you need an earlier version let me know. Edited July 10, 2013 by cg_Butler
Zdravko Barisic
Thank you Andy! I already tried that, but what you get is disturbed mash, for some more precise work. Look at this, please, as you can see, from the top it is somehow penthagon! Also, from the front view there are some small deformation. Perhaps, for the 4 segments it is almost OK, but for 5, I am not so shore. Uploaded with ImageShack.com
cg_Butler
Yes I noticed it distorted in a few places but thought it might be acceptable. Have you tried arraying? Perhaps draw a triangle to start with and place it's pivot point as if it was the center of the sphere (You could dray another geosphere that the right size and align the triangles pivot to it.. You'd get precise results if you know the exact scale. Then do a 3D array and see what happens! Do you know what happens on the top of that building. Can you see it on google earth? That might help. Or obtain more references of it.
Zdravko Barisic
I think I will go 4 segments, it is reasonable, also with very little small mistakes I do not where is the building
cg_Butler
Fair enough. Tricky thing to model using generic objects. Like I said if you know the dimensions of the triangles and how many there are in the framework an array would work really well I think.
Zdravko Barisic
Hey Andy, please look at the top of the existing building, you see that the mesh is already changed! So, this is more mathemathic problem!!! :)
cg_Butler
I had noticed that but didn't want to complicate things for you!

Corey Beaulieu
Use a regular old Sphere. Place an Edit Poly modifier on it. Select all faces and in the Graphite Modelling Tools there is a Generate Topology menu under Polygon Modelling. Choose Diagrid. The Sphere is now made from Diagonal Quads. If you then use a Front View and select the Verticies in horizontal groups (one row at a time) you can hit Connect and get your straight horizontals with triangular faces. Experiment with lower segments, but it should work.
cg_Butler
I was messing around with that method too myself, thinking i had struck gold and then saw your post! Well played sir!
