3GB DDR5 AMD Radeon HD 7950 any good?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm about to buy preconfigured machine and I have option of getting:

1. GTX 660 1.5GB

2. 3GB DDR5 AMD Radeon HD 7950 for extra $200.

Computer config is

i7-3930k

256GB SSD

1TB HDD

16 gb Udimm

I'm only rendering in Vray Adv so I don't need any GPU render power.

I'm only looking to improve viewport FPS as I'm currently getting 2~5FPS with my current machine.

My usual model has about 80mil polygons FYI.

Should I save $200 by buying GTX 660 and upgrade to GTX 770 down the line or would AMD 7950 suffice my need? Or perhaps even GTX 660 is good enough for me?

I've had AMD long time ago and experience wasn't so great with 3d max if I remember correctly.

Thanks,

J

So I ended up getting GTX 660 for now.

Do you think GTX 770 from EVGA with ACX cooler would help it keep cooler?

Do you think extra 2GB is making a change?

If not, I'm kind of tempted on EVGA GTX 770 2GB with titan cooler as I read that they are much quiter and cooler.

Can anyone enlight me?
