Hi:

i am looking for an archiCAD renderer, i need a renderer with radiosity (basically photorealistic) , i have been working with artlantis but is not the renderer i expect, 3d max is complex to me, someone knows a faster renderer compatible with ArchiCAD????

thanks a lot

I would wait for ArhciLumos version 2.0 because their version 1.5 or the demo version is very very buggy and not entirely stable. The radiosity and render quality is good to be sure, if you are able to wait it out (power-hungry program), but considering the fact that it only deals well with small files or small spaces, it's usefilness is rather limited (forget exteriors views!!!). Apparently they wre to fix most of these problems with version 2.0 which, according to their website was timed to be released with the release of ArchiCAD 9.0 , so that should be any day now.

But I hope you are aware that the next version of Artlantis (v5.0) will have radiosity. But the earliest possible time for a release might be sometime next year. And I agree with you about 3D Max/VIZ being notoriously difficult to learn; Discreet have done very little in the direction of reducing the infamously steep learning curve for beginners and the complexity of the program's interface, which typically tend to overwhelm most newbies (read architects who simply don't have time to master all the controls) who then tend to give up and seek other solutions. It's unfortunate because it is an otherwise powerful program.

In the meantime, I would personally recommend you check out Eovia's Carrara Studio series ( current version 3.0 although they recently announced version 4). An incredibly lovely renderer with a great user interface and a very user-friendly work-flow. It imports ArchiCAD 3ds models quite decently and smoothly (using the model-material option from the ArchiCAD 3ds export dialog box;) and it's relatively easy to set-up the render optionsonce you have initially established a easy-to-navigate template for the shaders (think drag and drop like Artlantis). If you ever used Bryce the famous landscape modeller that unfortunately died a while back when its inventors Metacreations was bought out by corel, then you'll absolutely love this program. And that's because a good number of the Eovia people wre formerly at MetaCreations and brought a lot of the good stuff from Bryce 5.0 into Carrara. For an architect who may not have time to go fine-tuning every single minute and niggling little detail in the render setup, Carrara's Wizard is a godsend as it gives you ready prepared render scenarios, that basically just need customization to fit your model and to achieve the effect you want. It's also pretty fast, at least compared to ArchiLumos or Lightscape and even MAX, when you take into account preparation time, as it uses a hybrid rendering system, that pre-processes the light, samples the image and does photon-mapping all in one shot ( i.e no waiting for radiosity, first before setting ray-tracing to render) to produce beautiful soft-shadows, colour-bleeding and multiple reflections with varied degrees of adjustability. My favourite Weapons of choice right now are Sketchup 4.0, ArchiCAD 8.1 and Carrara as all 3 programs communicate with each other rather effeciently and seamlessly

Anyway, you can also check out Eovia's website (http://www.eovia.com) and try the demo. I hope this helps.

I did the folliowing in Carrara in a couple of hours using the set-up from a previous render and minor modifications.

Cinema 4D is quiet a promising renderer for ArchiCAD with radiosity, caustics.

It has developed special plg in take ArchiCAD data.

Most ArchiCAD users I have talked to (and I agree) believe that Cinema 4D is the best visualization compliment to ArchiCAD. Artlantis produces nice results, but I personally like the modeling and animation capabilities you get with C4D.

thanks to all

Yesterday i was seeing archilumos, but a i had a problem(i think with version program),i have archicad 8.00 r2. I was so confused because i was sure i had archicad 8.1 r2... those versions are diferent or not??, and the demo add on couldnt be installed, the program didnt recognized archilumos.

The images showed in archilumos page looks interesting to me(just interiors), i have heard about carrara and i m interested but i dont know if the demo runs with the version i have, i am going to test carrara and show you friends the results, thanks to V_type,bricklyne, bhanu and ace face for your answers, and i am agree with all your opinions bricklyne... we are expecting artlantis 5.

You most certainly want to be using version 8.1 R2. There are speed and bug fixes in this version that you will want to take advantage of.

i know this is a bit of an old thread here but i havent been around for a bit. I use archicad and max and i dont get any problems. as long as you model reasonably cleanly in archicad. if you do get any glitches these are usually taken care of with marc lorenz's plugin

Hi everyone:

I am expecting artlantis v5 yet , jjoojojojo, but since my last post there have been some changes in archiCAD, with lightworks the program have made some interesting changes (not enough for me), and of course the star of the night is now maxwell, andronikos has made a render with maxwell i wonder if he has used archicad for the modeling??
