voltaire_ira
Here's a scene that i prepared to test mentalray's photometric capabilities. i made use of 6 erco avalon light fixtures each with a photometric web file downloaded from the erco website. rendered using minimal photon and fg samples (500) and global gi is at 50,000 photons.everything else is default. i also attached an image showing the fixture in actual applications. render time took around 30 minutes on my dual xeon 2.4's(too long). further tweaking is needed. c&c's are welcome! image1 is an actual photo showing he application of the luminaire image2 is a test render using the luminaire

voltaire_ira
here's the scene file with my preliminary settings. I'm trying to get optimium speed and image quality. http://md8solutions.com/voltaire/vault.rar i remodeled the scene and tried to match the photo as possible.this is as close as possible as i can get. kindly try this out and post your render settings and rendetimes. please, try using mentalray's g.i.. jucaro
Does hybernation have an effect on rendering speed?Or does it(hybernation) happen if ever at all when rendering? Yes, it DOES have an effect. Very much In fact, nothing ever happens when your PC is hibernating. If you plan on doing long renders, disable your PC's Power Management except for the display monitor. --its sleeping... Your P4 2.4 rendering at a staggerring, mind-numbing 11++HRS is not acceptable. Maybe you should tweak the scene and put some "Kicks" flavor to it. I tweaked the scene and it rendered in less than an hour, with acceptable results. My other old machine is a P4 1.5 256MB. Sometimes a slow machine can teach you the virtue of patience

joske
has anybody been succesfull at using the photometric lights AND photons it seems that there are no photons casted when trying out the scene in this thread. Which means that the renders shown here are only using Fgather, even if the photons are turned on. using the IES files should be possible in max 7/Mray, I read on the discreet site. (So if this is not possible in max 6 that would make sense i guess...)

BTW, I use shadow map for shadows.
joske
BTW, I use shadow map for shadows. mn...must be the shadow maps i guess... i allways use raytrace shadows. I couldn't get any photons in voltaires file... but starting over just with a Mray spot, it worked instantly... i'll have a another look
joske
are you using the lights from voltaire's file? or did you start over with new spotlights...? i can't seem to get good photons with the IES lights voltaire made... i did try the shadow map this time, still nothing...? anyone tried it also?
