Linked FBX (from Revit to Max) question...need help asap

I am working with a firm that has given me their Revit model to import into Max and work with. I have imported via linked fbx. Objects were imported into a single layer and are separated in that layer by materials. The problem is that many objects (in this instance callled "generic") have come in as a single object. The balcony railings, floors, theater seats, columns etc are all one piece of linked geometry (editable mesh).

How can I break out the geometry into individual entities and work and/or replace them? If I add an editable poly on top of the linked mesh the file almost crashes. I also believe that would also screw up the fbx link, so that model updates to the revit file from the architect would be a problem. How can I maintain a link to the revit file and also work on the geometry?

Thx!

Which version of Max are you on? 2014 (and I think 2013) can directly link the revit file. Behind the scenes it is still an FBX translation. When you link the file you should have option on how the mesh is organized.

I still prefer DWG files from Revit as anything with a curved surface get crazy tessellation with FBX.

Rather than adding a edit Polly use Edit Mesh. Edit Polly messes up the triangulation of hidden edges.

for me what work is import by families, other method create way to many element, and Max can't handle it, this way you still keep materials the only problem is they are not organized with the modeling and material assignment (as usually happens :p) you'll have similar or duplicate of materials. There is some scrips that can help you to deal with that.

Any ways I never keep the "live" link with REVIT, because most of the time the geometry is so full of co planar faces and errors that I don't have option for fix it that break the link, this any ways help me to draw a line and limit the amount of changes from the architect :p
