Imported character models deformed when animating

I'm trying to figure out how to add walking people to my animations.

So I downloaded this woman, and merged her with an empty scene to test.

The problem is, once I go into the biped panel and either load a bip file or use the footstep mode, the model immediately becomes instantly deformed. See attached.

 

Can anyone please explain where I'm going wrong, and how I can fix this? I'm completely at a loss here.

 

I'm using 3ds max 2012 on a PC.
