notamondayfan
Just wondering what the going rate is for office / desk space in the UK? I might be looking to rent somewhere, but would like a rough idea of what I could pay, and also what it generally might include, ie bills, internet, other facilities. I only need a very small space, 1 desk and somewhere for some paperwork! Thanks, Dean
Reitveld
In the US, we have shared offices. Where you lease a small secured cubical/office, but everyone shares the break room, conference room, lobby, receptionist, copy machine, etc. This makes it cheaper to get into a nice space without huge overhead. I'm sure you have something like that there in the UK.
notamondayfan
I think I've found some shared office space. Looks good, it's in the top floor of a converted mill just outside of Huddersfield town centre, and it's only for creatives too, so should be mixing with like minded people. Just in-case anyone searches, the space costs £120 and includes everything. I should be moving in next month, and I'll be commuting for the first time in 18 months! Reitveld
Woot! Also, that sounds like a great price. Best of luck with your new space.
kevinolsen
Search coworking space, that's the hot term in the states right now.
heni30
I've always thought of having a van like the ones the CIA uses for eavesdropping. Then I'd just park outside the client's location and work from there. Have a bunk for naps. Use the Starbuck's bathroom. Have GI / Will Travel - Renderings on Wheels - or something like that. notamondayfan
Believe it or not, I looked into all sorts of possibilities, from vans to garden office pods! Renting office space is the simplest thing to do, and doesn't require a large lump of cash to get going. If the shared office thing doesn't work out, I can always try something else! RyderSK
I was gonna advise coworking space oriented towards creative industry if all you're after is space for only you to work. I mingle in one (but don't rent) almost every week, it's great place to socialize with like-mind people. They also host great events oriented towards creativity, bussiness, etc. Good you already found a cool one :- ) The one I visit is reconstructed loft space in former very old industrial building. You would feel damn lonely in regular office, this way you can also have bar, chat rooms, etc. plethora of stuff. I currently rent regular office, for me and Veronika and occasionally up to two additional people, but when I decide it's time to grow again, we'll rent room in coworking space anyway. It really enforces the type of freedom modern companies should have. At coworking place you will never feel like at work, which is GOOD THING, because "working" is not the same as creating high quality stuff. Ah. btw, the 120 pounds is incredibly good price, does that even include fixed space (something you might want given you're not just laptop creative like rest of people there ) ? Probably not. But still, great price for UK, it's 120 euros for cheapst variant here in Slovakia :- ) Here is place I mention, and in the upper part, you can see where my CGI friend rents a place. He still gets semi-privacy, fixed desk, but all benefits of coworking space as well. For what is literally nothing. And did I mention PARTIES ?
