Many low poly items VS 1 high poly merged mesh

Hi Guys,

So recently iv had a few scenes where iv had to do a lot of pegolas, and wooden slats etc... Iv found that the more objects i bring into my max scene my PC seems to struggle. Now while this makes sense, my file size is still very low. So i would have a building that is say 300mb, and i would be struggling to move around my scene. Then if i take all the "sticks" or "slats" or what ever, and attach them all into one mesh, While my file size increases DRAMATICALLY i can move around the scene perfectly...

Has anyone else experienced similar scenarios? Any other fixes? Because while combining the mesh together works, the file size is not ideal...

Thoughts would be appreciated,

Tom

I always find working with many objects slower than having one high poly object. I find it's also slower at render time, as vray counts through all objects in a scene.

If I were you, I would just use xref scenes and make them invisible while still enabled - best way to deal with complex scenes in my opinion.

Max works better with one large object versus many object pieces. I prefer to keep the objects as instances in case something needs to change. It is far easier to change one instance than deal with making changes on a collapsed mesh. Hide what you don't need and work in box mode as much as you can. That, and look into getting a better video card to help display things better.

Make sure you are using compress on save in your file options, this helps deal with file size that is saved and has a very minimal impact on your workflow.
