jovicajankovic
Hi chaps, While i was googling, i found this review. Kinda confusing. Im in need of new workstation/pc for architectural work so im thinking between xeon e5 2620 and i7. This review is about that, a difference and advantages between them. http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-E5-2620-vs-Intel-Core-i7-4770 Comment this review, its more than welcome. Ty all. numerobis
I can't find any review on this page but i can say that the E5-2620 is really not the best choice for a workstation because it is clocked with only 2GHz and 2,5GHz single core turbo (2,3GHz (?) all core turbo). http://ark.intel.com/de/products/64594 All single threaded operations will be very slow. An i7 with 3,2-3,5GHz or overclocked to 4,5GHz+ will be much faster in this case. So if you really want a dual processor setup you should at least take one with more than 3GHz and i think. If i remember correctly the fastest available xeon E5-2600 hexacore has 2,9GHz. The upcoming new Ivy Bridge Xeon E5 V2 will be clocked slightly higher. jovicajankovic
Sry, i copied the wrong link. Heres the right one: http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-E5-2620-vs-Intel-Core-i7-4770
jovicajankovic
I posted the wrong link, heres the right one: http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-E5-2620-vs-Intel-Core-i7-4770 @ numerobis. u think that one i7 for example i7 4470K would be much better option than six core xeon? Yep,it is really faster when single threading, but does anything in 3ds max can be single threaded operation? Or in Auto CAD? Ty numerobis . numerobis
Sorry for the late reply. I overlooked this thread... Everything beside rendering or maybe some physics computations (i'm not sure about reactor, cloth or particle flow) in max is single threaded. In acad the only thing that is multithreaded is the 2d-regeneration and of course mental ray ( http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=15224826&linkID=9240617 ) But the viewport performace in max is more depending on the graphics card (unless your CPU is so slow that you're running into the CPU limit). So at the moment a processor with a higher single core performance like the 4770(K) will be better for these operations than a slower clocked hexa core with a lower per core performance, yes. The new 4930K has a single thread turbo of 4GHz, the 4770K 3,9GHz - if you don't want to overclock yourself.
Dimitris Tolios
I know passmark or w/e is hardly of use on drawing real life performance conclusions, but the fact that the 4770K and probably the 3770K alike outperform the 2620 in multithreaded performance (in passmark) needs nothing more to be said. Yes, any i7 it is a must better option than the slowest 6C Xeon...
