You should get a big coup of coffee or tea, seat in a comfortable chair and read the Help website of VRay for 3dMax, there is tons of information and samples regarding this and other questions that you may have, also the help info within 3dsMax is full of examples and explanations.

This question is easy to answer just knowing the basic concept of the tool.

Each light has it pro and cons, VRay is a plugin software created to work with 3dsMax, the main idea is an optimized tool to make great and fast renderings, in theory you should use only VRay elements to make the whole system work efficiently, but of course in some cases this can't not be applied or is not that strict. VRay is smart enough to be compatible with most of the default tools of 3dsMax.

3dsMax lights are simple with tons of options, VRay Lights render faster, but sometimes they don't have the same options that standard lights.

Review your concepts so later you can answer the next obvious question that will come to you.

What are the best setting to get a good render in VRay?

Cheers

I'll post up questions in particular problems in forum so to have all neeeded explained. thanks

What exactly are you trying to do? Interior lighting design? Do you need exact numbers for the lighting on surfaces, or do you just need images to present a design? And what software do you currently have? (What Max version, is this a Revit thing, etc.)
