TomD_Arch
So I went to set-up a 3-d displaced mapping under "mental ray Connection" last night. Hey guess what? It doesn't work. Made sure it was turned on over in the Renderer tab. I even left the diffuse map off to see if I could at least get the displacement pattern to show-up from the displacement assigned map and got nothing. Went up to the "Special Purpose Maps" and you can get a displacement to occur once you render, but the spinner doesn't seem to have any affect on the final product and you can't view it in the material sample window either. Did something happen to Displacement? Is it smoking crack these days?
TomD_Arch
Think I figured out my problem... I changed my image Gamma to use the override of 1.0 and BAM! Can anyone confirm was this something that used to default to the override in previous versions of 3ds Max, but it doesn't now?
Justin Hunt
Gamma got changed in 2014 so maybe its got something to do with that????
Scott Schroeder
Gamma got changed in 2014 so maybe its got something to do with that???? Yep, Autodesk's brainless idea to decide the images' gamma for you based on it's file type. You'll notice in 2014 that the input/output gamma settings are missing in your gamma/lut tab. If you ever wanted them back it is somewhat simple. Save your maxstart.max file in 2013 and they will come back in the 2014 menu as they are in there still, but hidden. TomD_Arch
Well, first off I'm working in 2013 and Mental Ray, so not sure why this happened. What concerns me more is that you can not seem to view the displacement in the material editor anymore either? Anyone got a fix for this?

What do I need to know to transition smoothly and keep my linear workflow setup? I also hear that the new Vray 3.0 offers the ability to do linear workflow -- but didin't it always. LWF is hard enough to wrap my head around and set up once -- upgrading software shouldn't make it MORE difficult.
