Max 2014 Auto Gamma not good

I found a way to do this without having to apply that script every time. You just have to change the .ini file in the Defaults settings. You can find that in C:\Users\(your username)\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\2014 – 64bit\ENU\en-US\defaults\MAX (or MAX.vray if you changed to vray using Customize->Custom UI and Defaults Switcher inside max). you can find inthere the CurrentDefaults.ini file.

Open this in notepad and scroll down until you find the gamma section and make it look like this:

“[Gamma]

DisplayGamma=2.200000

Enable=1

DisplayCorrectionMode=1

CorrectColorPickerState=1

CorrectMtlEditorState=1

InputGamma=2.200000

OutputGamma=1.000000

LUTFileName=

DisplayCorrectionPrefMode=1″

I'd save a backup .ini file incase you need to revert back.

If you save your maxstart.max file in 2013 or below you'll get the gamma controls back in the gamma/lut menu. They are still in there, but hidden by Autodesk. So opening a legacy version of a max file brings them back.

In Automatic mode, any image that contains a gamma will use that gamma value. Otherwise, if the image has no gamma specified, it will default to using gamma 2.2 for 8 bit images and gamma 1.0 for floating point images.

I'm hoping that 2015 brings the gamma control back, but I'm not holding my breath.

The problem is also when you open old files or files started with Max2013 and the gamma is different Max 2014 still apply whatever it think it should be.

I had to manually fix output gamma of EXR images while working in files from 2013.

It was an issue talked on the beta already, but once again AD didn't listen and just did what they though at the beginning.

Sometimes that trick doesn't work. It had in the past, so I'm not sure if a 2014 patch fixed it or not. Make sure your maxstart.max file is saved in the scenes folder wherever max decides to open that structure. Usually it's in your My Docs.

This script bring back the dialog in a little menu; http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/gamma-settings-for-3ds-maxdesign-2014
