Cheap hardware

Recommended Posts

Nice pile of excellent hardware

I agree that the corsair H100 is not the best choice, that is why i suggested a dual 140mm radiator. I think below that you can just use a notua like you said - or a Thermalright Silver Arrow or True Spirit or something similar.

Seasonic, nothing to add, can be seen from picture, I never bought different brand.

Me too... ;)

For the mainboard i have to say that i have an ASUS P9X79 WS in my workstation and ASRock in all of my nodes. They work fine and i think today ASRock boards are better overclocker for the same money and they start at maybe 20-30% lower prices - for a render node this is enough for me.

I think i would also buy a GTX760 at the moment (and maybe will do - i just have to clarify if there is a water cooler for the 4GB version) because of the much higher power consumption of the GTX770.

Or i will wait til Feb-March to see if nvidia's Maxwell gets released...

Btw. I will also order a 4930K this week... or another 3930K - i'm not sure which one will perform better (overclocked). But i think i'll try the 4930K.

I keep them identically clocked at 4.2GHz for good feeling and silent mode.

How is the voltage and heat compared to your 3930K's? I fear to hit a wall at 4,2-4,3GHz but i would like to get at least 4,5-4,6GHz to get the performance of my 3930Ks@4,7.

It's 1.35V at 4.2Ghz from head I think. I think it's fine to go much lower but for sake of good feeling I keep it here (and the fact that I did not get it long-time stable like the folks on forums at something really low and nice ike 1.25-1.3, but also I didn't care further and haven't done any uefi updates since). I don't watch temperatures much, but it's just few degrees higher than Sandy at much lower power consumpition, so by almost everything I've read, you won't be able to overclock most pieces to 4.6Ghz without stability problem. It's just not such a good overclocker. You will get slightly (just slightly slightly) better performance with 4930k at same clock, so this somehow offsets it. And...happier smile when electricity bill comes :- )

I don't think Asrock are bad by any means, I think it's hard to even buy bad motherboard these days, esp. at high-end platfrom like LG2011. But for the same amount of money, the Asrock is quite more "gamery" in mind than the Asus P9X79/WS/Pro/Deluxe with slightly unusable features for work at slightly worse build quality at same/close price level.

760/770 is actually a tough choice with the recent discounts for 770. But I don't really need the 770/780/+ performance for what I do, and 760 is very decently cheap with 4GB option. It's much better buy than last year 660/670. Could still be better/cheaper though..

Edit:Nope, wrong number

It's already built so I can take a snapshot. Yes, the Noctua is gigantic even in large case like this, but it's also very silent. The only downfall I can think of it can really bend the motheboard on rough transport (which is not easy by any chance itself, because the whole setup is around 24KG).

I agree deciding on what to buy can be a lot to go through because the options are now so broad, and it's not really about making good/bad anymore just really picking the best for certain criteria in every category for the money spent.

Ok, thanks. CPU-Z under load? My 3930Ks need 1.37v for 4.6-4.7

I know, this is why i was asking... the perfomance gain should be 3-4% for rendering at the same clockspeed. And the scaling with faster RAM seems to be a bit better.

Someone at the Asus ROG forum tested 45 4930K at 1,4v under water (i think i wouldn't go higher than 1,375v for 24/7, but maybe that's just me) and here is the result:

2% of CPUs will do 4.8GHz at 1.40V.

20% will do 4.7GHz.

48% will do 4.6GHz at 1.40V.

28% will do 4.5GHz at 1.40V.

2% will do only 4.4GHz at 1.40V.

So from these values it doesn't look too bad - 4,5-4,6GHz should be possible with my MoRa.

I think i will try it...

yes... i can't find any information regarding more than 105-106 MHz BCLK and i think the results posted with 112MHz BCLK are far from stable - i don't know. But i think if it would be really possible we would have seen more results within the last months. So i will wait now for Haswell-E next year to get more than 6 cores - this will be 2 years without performance gain for my workstation then. Hopefully Intel will give us back strap/bclk overclocking for xeons...

  • 4 weeks later...

Pretty much decided on components. Now the torturous wait for an upcoming job to get the go-ahead to fund/justify the build!

Mobo: X79 Deluxe, was initially looking at the X79 Sabretooth for toughness and 5 year warranty but those little fans could be annoying.

CPU: Core i7 4930k

Ram: Corsair Vengeance low profile 32Gb quad channel kit (4x8Gb)

Cooling: Just waiting on the new Dark Rock Pro 3 from BeQuiet coming out, seems good and quiet and like the aesthetics of it.

GPU: Gainward Phantom 770 4Gb

Case: Fractal Design Define R4, tempted to forego the side window in favour of mounting a side fan for better cooling after reading this: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2012/02/10/the-big-cooling-investigation/1

PSU: Seasonic X-Series 750W 80+ Gold

HDD1: Samsung 840 Pro 256Gb

HDD2: WD Caviar Green 3Tb

I've set up a price tracker using http://uk.camelcamelcamel.com/ to keep an eye on fluctuating prices and hopefully not overspend and grab a few bargains.

I'm not sure what you're waiting for with your price tracker, but you can search for the best prices in UK at http://www.skinflint.co.uk. You can configure a wishlist and search for the best package price. But maybe you already know this...
