demo38
I'm just putting together a new machine and bought a PNY nVidia GeForce FX 5200 Ultra 128mb card. Possibly a bad decision.... I've installed the newest nVidia drivers from nvidia's site. I'll try replacing those drivers with the ones that shipped with the card tonight. The system is AMD 64 3000+, Gig of Ram, ASUS K8N-E Deluxe, 160 GIG SATA.... I just got it put together and have the latest nVidia drivers installed, but when I go to run the demo that nVidia sends out, that pixie fairy one walking in a tree, for instance, it C H U G S.... No matter how I adjust my Anti-alias setting, v-sync, etc... It automatically adjust screen res down... I don't have any apps installed as of yet to really test it out, but I was wondering what your opinions were on this card? Is it too low end? Inadequate for 3D? Just OK? Obviously there are much better cards out there, like the Quadro series but I can't afford them right now... Thanks for any input! Just wondering if I would be better upgarding and selling this one off on eBay while it's still fresh... Looks like prices are such that I could jump to a 5700 Ultra for another $60... Mr.K
Hey demo38, I had the same card and the same issues. No matter what I did the new drivers would not work. I finally re-installed the old ones and it worked fine. No problem running Vectorworks,Lightwave and Lightscape.I have since upgraded to the 5700 256mb like your thinking about and must say its worth the extra 60 dollars. It runs the programs I have mentioned above with out a hitch and with the latest drivers. A GeForce FX 5200 Ultra is WAY too low-end. Actually, it amazes me the fact that this isn't so uncommon, a lot of people buy huge computers with 2GB of ram, dual Xeons and stuff, and go and spend just a few bucks on a cheap video card. I think right now I would go for a GeForce 6800, it is very fast, it allows you work with complex scenes, and it is pretty good without going for cards suchs as a Quadro, FireGL, or Wildcats. demo38
Thanks for the feedback guys. I was afraid of that... I tried installing the older drivers, and as stated Mr.K, it works fine then. I'll be looking into possibly doing the upgrade soon! I'm not a hardcore gamer, and Lightwave is pretty lightweight so I should be OK for a while anyway... Thanks again!
