voltaire_ira
Hi, here's a scene which i'm trying to copy from a photo. Modeled in autocad and rendered in max using mentalray and photometric lights from erco. everything was guess work since i had no plans nor details,i just based everything from the photo.of course, i tried to proportion evrything...this is as close as i can get. C&c's are welcomed! my version the photo...

Fran
Hi John, this is looking good. There are some artifacts in the arch over the doorway and the cables for the pendants are aliased pretty badly. I've noticed that thin things really need high sampling to render properly in mental ray. I will be interested in how you eventually illuminaite the luminaire models. The job I'm currently working on is for a lighting manufacturer, so the focus of the scenes is the luminaires and they have to look really good. It is very hard for me, because GI can't just do everything and I have to add lighting rigs to them.

I had to jack-up the aa settings just for the grooves to show up properly.regarding the luminaires, i might try replacing the material for the diffusers with a self illuminated mat. may i know how you rigged yours? my luninaires are not lighted, but they're pumping out lights. Yes, I apply a self illuminated material to the diffusers and will usually exclude them from the photometric lights that are lighting the scene. This is with radiosity. With mr, you have the mr Area Omni, which you can use just to illuminate the luminaire housing. I don't like to use a self illuminated material on the housing. I have found that objects with a self illuminated material don't have any specular highlights - at least with radiosity.

voltaire_ira
the scene took about 2 hours to render with the aa settings set to 4/64 lanczos filter. though my test renders are set to 1/64 - 1 and rendertime would be around 10-15 minutes. spatial contrast would help, thanks for reminding me. I think jucaro posted that article in the tips and tricks forum. here's an update. i illuminated the luminaires by changing the reflectors materials to a self-illuminated material.
