philvanderloo
I wish I could get the hang of this importing from Revit procedure. max 2014 allows me to import via link/Revit and I am choosing to import by material. So when I get the file into max begin to set up an interior kitchen rendering, I select a door or sink, or whatever, and objects are selected by phase instead of material. In other words, all objects on "phase existing" are selected. What happened to "by materials"? I just wish there was a good tutorial available for importing from Revit and being able to select objects individually.
Scott Schroeder
Combine by material is just that. If your material contains "Phase Existing" then all objects that are tagged with that are combined. Possibly into a multi-sub object. You know the old saying, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink? Well, same goes for Revit to Max.
matthewgriswold
Phil, I would make sure you don't have a graphic overrides enabled. If a category is set to override, then the next tab over controls how the object is displayed and what material is used. Hope this helps.
Francisco Penaloza
I would not recommend use the "by Material" option, because it explode the geometry, What work for me is "By Family" this also help you to lower the amount of objects in the scene, since Max keep the instancing information from REVIT (Finally something works hum?) Linking by Family also retain the materials instancing, unless you change or overwrite the materials names within REVIT, lets say you have a Brick wall and you change the name to red Brick wall, then you'll have 2 brick materials instead of one. Now this method it is not free of problem of course but seems to work fine in large projects. The exchange between REVIT and 3dsMax still a hit a miss it is not as fluent as Autodesk show but hopefully it gets better.
philvanderloo
I never would've known that a "phase" is also considered a material??? So when I try to select the panel on one door to apply a material, I get 3/4" of the model and I STILL don't know how to break it up short of using an edit poly modifier which I'm sure isn't the best procedure. And bringing it in with "combine by Family" is even worse. Not sure why, but when I try to select one object after doing this I get the entire model. Even though obviously everything is from a different Family. I'm sure this also has to do with phasing. I would give my kingdom for a good tutorial, that really works, on importing a revit file into max and applying materials to INDIVIDUAL objects. By the way I don't really have a kingdom,...... matthewgriswold
A material is only applied to a phase if your Phase Filter is set to override New, Existing or Demolished building elements. In Revit, check to see what your Phase Filter is set to, under the View Properties for the 3D view you're linking to 3ds Max. Then check to see what the settings are for that Phase Filter. I just started a default project, went to a 3D view and the Filter setting is Show Previous + New. The settings for Existing are set to Overriden...change that to By Category.
