Hey All;

Had a question. A friend and I are trying to do a collaborative project. I want to model an object in 3ds Max using Vray to texture, and import it into After Effects so he can add camera movements and visual effects. Is this even possible? what would be the best way to go about this?

Cheers,

Nolan

After effects it is a 2.5 D application not a 3D compositor like Nuke or Fusion and others so insert as 3D object it is not possible

The only way to work with 3D mesh in After Effect it is though Cineware or Video Copilot's Elements 3D..

With that said, you may need to forget about VRay materials, unless you plan to bake all textures. Elements 3D work great and the quality is very impressive but it is limited to it own environment whereas Cineware had Cinema 4D as 3D back end app, so you have a little more choises, although you need Creative cloud to work on it.

It's my plan to make 3D Max object (with textures) available in After Efftecs (still as 3D object):

1. You need Element 3D 1.6 plugin for after effects (it's cheap - 149$).

2. Export your 3d model as OBJ from 3D max (with textures).

3. Open after effects (after install Element 3D), make new composition, new solid layer and add to this solid a effect (from Effects menu) titled Element3D.

4. Click you new solid layer, check list of effects. Click SCENE SETUP in your Element3D effect.

5. New windows (project window for Element3D) will be opened.

6. In left top corner you have option "IMPORT". Click.

7. Now you are ready to import you 3D OBJ model (with textures) and work with it like in 3D Max (move, scale, rotate, animate, add lights to scene, make DOF - depth of field woth After Effects cameras, use your 3D model as source of particle to make hundreds movable instances which are able to change position, scale, material, speed and others).

Good luck.

There are also scripts that will output your 3ds max camera movement to After Effects. You can then link that to a null object and place text or particle elements etc convincingly in your scene. See Max2AE, there are others too.

You would need to animate all movement in max though, so not sure if that's what your looking for.
