Dimitris Tolios
Hello!! Im planning on buying a new desktop system and learn Vray. Which card should I choose to use Vray RT for preview in 3ds: Radeon 7970 or GTX 760? Many thanks for your answer!! Vray RT GPU is problematic with AMD cards, despite it promising OpenCL compatibility, and Radeon 79xx/R2xx GPUs being much faster than GTX cards in OpenCL. Don't know if there will be a fix anytime soon, but I would not hold my breath. Fix has been promised for more than 1.5 year now, but I doubt it will happen before Vray 3.0 launches (if that). So, despite the 7970 in theory being much much faster than the GTX Titan or 780Ti in OpenCL, with VRay RT is like 10 times slower. Your bet should be on the best GTX (most CUDA cores, decent VRam buffer) you can afford.
gerdkaneider
Hey Dimitris, I saw this video on youtube: maybe it means that amd is better supported by vray 3??
numerobis
Why? Because of the "8950" in the name? They are using no AMD cards but 3 Nvidia K5000 with CUDA (http://www.boxxtech.com/Products/3dboxx-8950) btw. $24.000 for this build - LOL they are just insane regarding their pricing... but it seems that there are enough customers out there that are willing to pay these ridiculous prices.
