Krisztian Gulyas
Im new to all this node thing, so i need some help. I would like to build one for distributed rendering. I would use that as a workstation and my current machine as a render node. I was thinking about buying an i7 4770k 16gb RAM (or maybe 24gb). I dont know big the HDD capacity should be. Is it enough to buy a cheaper HDD just to install the softwares i use? Do I need a graphics card, or is the built enough? The thing I know nothing about is how do I connect the computers. Thats where i really need your help. I tried googling it, but found nothing useful. Thank you.
numerobis
I would use that as a workstation and my current machine as a render node. I was thinking about buying an i7 4770k 16gb RAM (or maybe 24gb). So you want to build a new workstation and use your old one as node? I think this is a different question... You're asking about the graphics card for the node but this depends on the CPU and the board. For a 4770K you wouldn't need a graphics card for a node, but for your existing system? Maybe you should tell us your existing components first. Yes you can use a small size HDD or SSD for the node. A 60GB SSD should be enough. Concernig the RAM: you should go for 16GB or 32GB. 24GB would mean 2x8GB+2x4GB in dual channel. Networking is really easy today - no magic anymore... To connect your node you just need to plug in another network cable into your router - if there are free ports left, otherwise you need a switch to extend the ports. Then look into the network configuration of your existing system to see how it is set up. I suppose as DHCP, if you have done nothing. DHCP means that every network client will get an ip-adress assigned automatically. So just look that the workgroup name is the same (which should also be the case if you haven't changed it). There could also be a MAC-filter enabled - i don't know who has set up your network and how. In short... just plug it in and see if it works. If not, you have to check your settings. For me it's less noise, heat and faster reopening of max when rendering a lot of images
