Hello all, I havnt posted in years... Been working all this time here in the Mexican south east. I am relocating to the Denver area within a few months and I am just looking into how the market is, looking up job posts n such. I am currently a freelancer but when I go back to the states I plan on working for a firm, trouble is I have no idea on what to ask for a salary so this is where you guys come in. Would like to hear from you based on my experience and work what would a "ball park" figure be for what I can realistically expect to earn in a visualization firm.

Thanks all for your input :)

The Denver market is up and down. While home prices in this area are the highest they have ever been, the problem is that no one is really building new homes. So local residential viz jobs are still pretty weak. If you look at the large scale commercial side, those are fairly strong in this area with the exception of one firm in particular.

There really isn't a ball park figure to give you. It really depends on where you work. Smaller shops will probably be less, larger shops might be more. Then again, it can be reversed. Denver as a city is pretty average in terms of cost of living. Give your future employer what you think you are worth, then negotiate back from there.

Thanks Scott, Lazlo

I don't want to sell myself short, that's why I need to at least have an idea on what to ask for. I checked salary.com but couldn't really find anything, what are we called anyway? Looked under 3d artist and 3d visualizer and nothing.

It really depends on where and who you work for. If you work for an architecture firm, you may get paid less depending on how they view the visualization process. Some firms think its an integral part, some think it's just magic and sorcery. If you work for an actual visualization house, you may be paid more. Then again, it could be different.

I'd say for your skills, your absolute low limit should be somewhere between 44-48k. The biggest decision is if it's a lower number, can you live on it and can you afford to play hardball with them to get a higher wage. Sometimes you can decline the offer, sometimes you just need to get an income coming in the door.

Wages can be universal, but they can also be somewhat personalized.

Carlos,

you are right there is nothing that matches our field. The closest I could find is Technical Illustrator and Architectural drafter.

Scott I think is right with the numbers. I do not know you visa details however they might offer you less because you are not US citizen or permanent us resident. Or not. It has nothing to do with you, is business. Anyway if you accept the job do not go on a spending spree thinking that you have a reliable income forever.

Good luck!

They are building a bunch of houses out where I live (out by Southlands) but the problem is that they are all being built by the big, national home builder/developers so it is the same few plans with different paint colors, the designs were done long ago so no need for new work to be done. The only "residential" work that I see around here as "new design" is multi-family or senior living which is mostly done by commercial architects (I am in commercial but we don't do residential).

I am fairly new here (moved from Austin, Texas two years ago) and don't really know who does what yet in terms of viz. We do some in-house but most is contracted out to a company in California that one of our employees worked with at a firm there.

Best wishes on the job search.
