Guest claus
Advise wanted - for better performance in v-ray / vray rt Current setup: asus p8p67 i7 2600k 16 GB quadro 2000 Struggling with viewportperformance and using rt in cpu mode with poor performance. I want to upgrade my system somehow. Im working with architectural scenes often with high-poly count. Had thoughts about buying a gtx to set up for rt (using the q2000 for viewport), but worried about driver issues with gtx and quadro together. the tesla cards is far from within my budget. alternatively: any good suggestions about a dual gtx setup RAM vs cuda. budget: $1000 Edited December 16, 2013 by claus
Dimitris Tolios
Due to a personal project, I've been experimenting with Quadro + GTX cards in the same system for quite some time and in quite a few combinations. Honestly, I never had issues with the drivers. Everything works fine from the 1st time around. I usually tend to install the Quadro, run a clean driver install (requires rebooting to flush the old driver) for it and when it is done I power down, install the GTX and just run the GeForce driver. Done... Tried Quadro 4000, 2000, K2000, 600, K600. All worked fine in conjunction with one or more out of GTX Titan, GTX 670 & GTX 660. No need to go extreme and deplete your budget. If what you have now works but it is slow, means that the 1GB of VRam the Quadro 2000 has is enough for your typical models, and since all the current GTX models like the 760 or better are 2GB or more you will do fine. Best value is easily the 760 2GB. 4GB models are available, but for the price premium doesn't really worth it. If you need 4GB, try to find a used or old stock 670 @ a good price. Slightly faster than the 760. The 770 is also a good choice, and so is the 780 with the latest price changes (available below $500, and offering 3GB by default). Guest claus
Thaks Dimitris Great ! I will try with a GTX in combination with the quadro then ! Since I then only have to buy one card Ill probably go for the 780 (3gb). Would there be any logic i Choosing the 770 4gb instead because of the extra gb ram? the main use is for vray-rt, where I use it to get an idea of materials and light settings. I usualy use a lot of proxies, and would like them to render with rt. this have never worked in cpu mode.
Dimitris Tolios
Well, for anything that can fit in 3GB of RAM, the 780 will be faster. And more expensive. Thing is, with progressive renderers if scene + assets fits in VRam, it works. Regardless of speed. If it doesn't, it just won't even start. So it depends on your workflow and model complexity. But, if what you are doing now was doable with a Q2000, that would have 750MB or so left in its VRam buffer after basic viewport information, it will surely work in a 3GB card. Don't know how prices are in Denmark, but in the US contenders average: GTX 760 4GB - $300 GTX 770 4GB - $390 GTX 780 3GB - $530 It does look good for the 780, as it actually packs exactly 2x the CUDA shader units the 760 has, and is more power efficient than 2x 760s.
