3DS Max 2014 Viewport Performance while Linking CAD Files

Just thought I would share with you guys some of the things I have come across while investigating some viewport issues in 3DS Max 2014 and Linking CAD files

I am running the new Quadro K6000 on a new BOXX Workstation...this machine is an absolute beast.

So, the drivers are up to date, have one of the best graphics cards on the market and I have put 3DS Max to the test. My findings are that linking CAD files proves to completely slows down viewport performance in 3DS Max. Even trying to detach a linked file seems to cause major freezes in 3DS Max. I found that if I import and then group my CAD file, the performance is MUCH MUCH better. Not sure why, but I thought I would share this with everyone to save some hassle and headache in the future. when bringing in CAD files... again, just what I have come across...maybe others have better solutions. Interested to hear...

Hi Desmond,

I have the same issue and was wandering if you found a solution in the meantime? I was having the feeling that it was because i was using a "relative" old GPU. That is the only part i need to revise soon. But now i saw your post with exactly the same issue on quite the setup.

Hope to hear from you if you have found a solution.

Ciao

What I did in the long run (after a few different attempts to fix this the short way), was linked the cad and placed it where I needed in my scene. I then "Saved a copy" as for its own file. In that new file I binded it into the scene. Cleaned all the stuff that I didnt need. Grouped it, re-saved and put it all onto one layer. I then used that clean file as an import back into my scene and it completely sped things up.

I found either that the linking did weird things sometimes. The viewport seemed to perform much better after if was grouped onto one layer in the new file.
