New PC Hardware performance vs previous

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum and I would like to hear your opinion about my computer configuration. I am a 3d max 2012 user and I use mental ray for my renders.

The new computer:

HP Z620

Intel Xeon E52620 @ 2GHz (2 processors)

250 GB SSD for system

32 GB RAM

NVIDIA Quadro K4000 (3GB)

The previous computer:

HP Z600

Intel Xeon E5620 @ 2.4GHz (2 processors)

12 GB RAM

ATI FirePro V5700 (FireGL) (512GB)

I am a little disappointed because I did a render test with the same 3dmax file on both computers and the result was 49 minutes on my old PC and 31 minutes in the new one. Am I expecting too much from the new configuration? Is there anything I can do to increase the performance of the Quadro card?

Thanks to all in advance

Quadro will not help with software rendering

As far as CPUs it looks about right. 4 cores x 2.4Ghz = 9.6Ghz vs 6 cores x 2.0Ghz = 12Ghz, plus there are single threaded processes during the rendering (scene preparation) which will be slower on 2.0Ghz CPUs.

Well, maybe there is a reason the E5-2620 is the cheapest six core Intel sells, and why it has been mentioned multiple times that going for a 2P system is not an "end game" solution, unless you drop serious money on the CPUs.

Still you got a pretty good speed bump.

The CPU GHz aggregate calculation posted above, is a bit off in this case, as the two systems don't share the same or similar architectures, for GHz to be directly scalable.
