JeremyRamsay
Hi all, really quick question for someone. I'm teaching Max to some students and in their version the selection box is in black and it needs to be changed to white. I've looked in the usual places but am pushed for time, can anyone help. They are using 2013. Many thanks.
Corey Beaulieu
I believe it is in the Customize User Interface section under the Colors Tab. You have to try a few to figure out which one exactly.
Scott Schroeder
It should be Colors -> Geometry -> Selection.
JeremyRamsay
Yeah that's where I've looked already, I got close but not quite.
JeremyRamsay
Thanks Scott, but that changes the colour of what you select, not the colour of the selection box you draw around it. That's what I meant by 'got close'. Thanks anyway.
Scott Schroeder
You could always try resetting the color UI and see if that reverts it. Also, delete the 3dsmax folder on their user directory and let max refresh it on start.
JeremyRamsay
Thanks Scott but at the moment they're finding it tricky to draw a box. I think going into the UI's might be a little beyond them. Also when the Uni computers are switched off overnight, they revert back to their default interface so, thinking about it, whatever I get them to do will be erased when the comps get shutdown. I'm hoping it's just a glitch as I don't know why Autodesk would allow to be changed, something that didn't need to be.
Josef Wienerroither
I looked high and low and finally think the selection box's color cannot be adjusted. In the color settings file there is a "Selection Handles" color name, but that does'nt influence the selection brackets either Are you sure we are talking about the "Selection Brackets" here - and not the new "Display Selected with Edge" default mode ? The selected edge display color would be adjustable via "Geometry->Selection" , but i just noticed that changing this from the default white to something else requires restarting 3ds Max to get accepted... Black selection brackets might hint a graphics card driver problem i think ...
JeremyRamsay
Thanks very much for the effort. Just to be clear we're talking about the selection box you draw around an object to select it/encompass it. It's specific title is 'Selection Region', beside the 'Select By Name' icon on the tool bar. It's a puzzle that it's black on some of the Uni computers and white on others. Thanks again. Josef Wienerroither
Ahh - than we are talking about the selection rectangle one drags open to select objects ? Well there's a color setting for this: It's called "Selection Rubber Band" in the Appareance Color settings, which are the settings in the lower listbox on the To make it adjustable you have to set the "scheme" dropdown to "Custom", otherwise it's set to a color which comes from the Windows color settings, so maybe this is the source for the problem: a changed windows color setting or an unusual Windows scheme ? BTW: in my tests the colro of the selection rubber band does'nt change from the white, so i guess this color setting is'nt really hooked up internally ... hockley91
I also have the same issue....I believe the solution was changing the vieweport background color to near black, or something. I got it to work at one point, but now it's not. But,from what I read there is no way to change it. You just have to find a background color that will inverse the selection box line. Trial and error kind of thing. It will change on it's own if the color is correct... Also, I want a "black" background. I'm used to that way of working and I can't save my interface. Whenever I save with black background and white gridlines, I can save it. But, 3DS Max 2014 does not remember and it get all whacked out when I open it. I dunno.... hockley91
***UPDATE*** Okay, I did it!!!! Under the Customize User Interface, change the viewport background color to R-1, G-1, B-1. I also changed the Viewport Gradient Bottom and Top to this setting as well. I right click the "wireframe, shade, etc." settings and changed my background to "solid color" and I'm getting a white selection window instead of black. My gridlines are also set to "white" I saved the setting and closed out of Max. Here's where I get a bug issue. Even though I saved the interface setting, when Max reopens, the gridlines are mainly white, but the "main" grid lines revert to black. However, the selection window is still white. Josef Wienerroither
Yeah - that "white grid" not saving bug is a bug which haunts Max over several versions now. To fix it , i usually edit my color config files via text editor ( usually "MaxStartUI.clrx" in your UI folder, files by hand The corresponding line should something similar like this ( Max should be closed when editing, otherwise it would overwrite the edits again on exit)
JeremyRamsay
Thanks Josef, I think not all of your reply came through when you were explaining the location of the Appearance Color Settings. Can you let me know where they are please. Thanks.

Crazy Homeless Guy
If this happens again just delete the 3dsmax.ini file. This will reset everything to its default state.
