Hey everyone,

I'm a newbie here, so Ill start by saying my name (Chris) and I'm currently taking a 3DS class. I'm about 4 or 5 weeks in and so far I absolutely enjoy the program (although it is a steeper learning curve than many other programs), I would much rather do this than draft plans all day! I think I'm getting the hang of it, but I know there is so much more to learn.

My first project using 3DS is the Barcelona Pavilion, really simple to model but a great opportunity to learn about materials and how to replicate them. So far I have the structure modeled and applied all of the materials. I have these three renderings of what I have done up to this point, let me know what you guys think and how/if they can be improved, I'd love to hear from ya!

Image 1 is missing the sky which will have a lot to do with feel of the overall image. Of course it's grainy but I kinda like that - sort of like an overexposed film photograph. The light tonalities on the exterior surfaces are very nice.

Image 2 is too dark even though I like it that way - a real night time shot. But if it was for a client you'd have to turn the lights up I think and put in a nice sky. Someone throwing a stone in the water is a little distracting, especially with the main building being so small in the image.

Image 3 I would get rid of the camera tilt; especially for a Mies building. The end of the middle wall is not mapped correctly - the lines should follow the pattern of the large surface. And there are some lighter areas on the top and bottom of it that seem strange. And it should be way more reflective. The feel of the light seems harsh. The adding of furniture will help. The column isn't reading as a cruciform.

I appreciate your input!

I will most likely put some more light in image 2, even though I do like the contrast between the interior light and darkness outside it is a bit hard to see some of the details.

I am glad you pointed those things out in image 3. I knew something was off. I must have tilted the camera slightly by accident. And hopefully once I fix the mapping it will correct the lighter areas on the top and bottom. Looks like a weird reflection of the floor and ceiling.

Thanks!

Chris, these are looking nice for such a short time with Max. The only thing I'd say in terms of your images is that the bump on your water seems out of scale with a pool. Looks more like someone plunked a rock into a pond or lake.

If you end up re-rendering at all you could un-tick specular in your lights where they burn small reflection into the Chrome, but they look fine if you don't.

Anyway.... Photoshop can make your images come alive. You may be best served to just spend your time there.

Nice job and keep practicing. It takes time.

Is there a reason why picture number 3 is the exact scene/materials as in this thread?

There is no conspiracy here... I teach a class at a local Architectural college: Beginners Max/Mental Ray. The class is only 8 weeks and only meets once a week so I encouraged people to post on the forums here for advice, info, and CC on images along the way. I'm always on the forums for help and thought it would help encourage people to branch out more by getting other opinions involved.

The class teaches through modelling the Barcelona Pavilion. We provided a few "on the fly" assets as we taught which some students may still be using, but our goals were to start thinking on a Viz level more than a "learn everything there is to know about Max" level. Sadly, there just isn't time for the latter.
