Changing bitmap locations

Hello,

Recently I got a Synology Diskstation in order to move there all my content and make the distributed rendering a little bit easier.

The problem now is that I need a quick way to relink all bitmaps to the changed folders.

from:

D:/

to:

\\diskstation\cg\

and so on.

I was able to figure out how manually change the root folder, but I actually rearranged the whole structure of my library.

What originally was "D:/models/duck436346t" became "\\diskstation\cg\models\interior...

Now the real problems is that my library weights around 2TB.

It has thousands of max files and I literally can't edit them all.

What im looking for is a plugin or a script that will allow me to do that.

Or at least commit a search for bitmaps and automatically relink them.

I did try Relink bitmaps script and many more like Project Manager and none of them worked.

Most of them just freeze.

Im running 3ds max design 2014.

Help?

I'm surprised Relink Bitmaps didn't work, it's always worked for me.

Why don't you approach the problem from another angle, and map a network drive, so that \\diskstation\cg\ still appears as D:/ from your PCs?

Relink Bitmaps appears to be doesn't work with Max 2014 in general.

Do you know an alternative?

I can assign the netdrive as local D:/, but I radically changed the library structure.

Many folders are added, renamed, changed and deleted.

So assigning as D:/ would not do much.

You might wanna take a look at this:

When you find the relevant script to relink your bitmaps, let this script run on all your max files.

I will give this batch a shot. Looks promising.

Thank you!

I'm on 3Ds Max Design 2014 x64 and Re-link bitmaps works perfectly fine for me.

Ditto for me. Zero issue what so ever.

I think you are seeing the freeze due to the sheer amount of information that the script has to process and since you drastically re-did your entire structure, drive seek time is going to take a while. How long do you wait to see if the script comes back?

I used to wait for at least 10-15 minutes, and then max crashed.

Anyway I found out what was the problem and now it works like a charm.

I just used R-Drive to recover my system to a previous state and tried again. Worked we'll thus time.

Anyway drive seek time is not an issue.

If you are changing bitmap locations this tool is crazy fast but be very careful using it. It does not locate missing file like re-Link but it will repath multiple max files in less than a minute without the need to actual open any of the Max files.

I would recommend only using this on copies of your Max files because if you repath wrongly then you will need to use Re-Link to locate the textures.

Eli, I was wondering... how did you resolve the issue?

I use Relink Bitmaps and have tried a few other scripts in the past. My workflow is a compromise, I only worry about repathing assets in the Max files, that I actually need to revisit, as and when I open them. So sometimes I open an old scene, see that the links are broken, run Relink Bitmaps, and save.

I'm thinking of getting a NAS, as I have a few machines... but am always deciding on a "better" folder structure and amending file naming protocols for assets...

It would be nice if it were just a case of "job done, no worries" :)

All comments/suggestions welcome!

Since I don't know any programming language or max script I solved it simple - hired a guy to repath all library. Took him two weeks.

And when I say I hired a guy I mean I just imagined its happening to someone else and not to me.
