Mac Pro upgrade

Recommended Posts

Hey there, I recently bought myself a 2009 quad core Mac Pro for work within C4D+Vray and PS, usual stuff as you may say. Im planning to upgrade it, and Im constantly looking into RAM, GPU and CPU options. Guys, I know there are some of you who works on similar hardware with the same software, could you please give me and advice what will be best for my mac pro. Im particularly interested in GPU options, since there are not as many GPUs that are designed for Mac, and Im not to sure could I just put in PC GPU and get good or better results.

Normal PC GPUs will work with a "hackintosh" (PC with modded Mac OS) but doubt will work with a regular Mac Pro.

Your best bet would be a Quadro with a MAC BIOS.

The latest quadro cards available with such an option, are the $1,200 (new) Quadro 4000 and the $1,750 K5000. The 4000 might be found used for $500 or so.

I doubt that a 2009 Mac Pro worth's this kind of investment really. If it was a 2012 or so Dual Xeon model, maybe, but a 2009?

Yeah, I was sort of looking into sapphire 7950 mac edition, not to sure if its worth buying "MAC" edition, since regular 7950 costs like 100 bucks cheaper. Its 2009 model, but I have a firmware of 2010 installed, so I could put in hexacore CPUs.

This is a helpful thread from MacRumors about adding NVIDIA cards to a Mac Pro

Basically, if you're running Mountain Lion or Mavericks, you can plug a number of PC graphics cards into your Mac Pro and they will work. The only think that won't is the boot screen. The screen will stay blank until the login screen is displayed. I'm running a GTX 670 4GB as my display card in a 2010 Mac Pro.
