Buffalo Bills
Does anyone know where I could find a good thatch roof or create one? I have this project that contains a couple small huts with thatch roofs on them. Any help would be great! Thanks.

Buffalo Bills
Thanks Strat. I might have a solution to my problem. I will share it as soon as I render it out. But if anyone else is interested in sharing some innovative ways of creating thatch roofs that would be great! Thanks
Buffalo Bills
Here is what I did to create this thatch roof. one is the map, the other is the object with the map on it. See what you think. Sample: http://www.cgarchitect.com/forum/filepush.asp?file=Thatch_Roof_Sample.jpg Image: http://www.cgarchitect.com/forum/filepush.asp?file=Thatch_Roof.jpg You won't see this up close like this it will end up pretty far away. Ernest Burden III
How about doubling the polys that are the roof surface, offsetting by a small amount and having the texture map have an alpha channel, use different orientations on several copies of the polys--layered effect. Buffalo Bills
Ernest, Thanks! I will give that a try. Mine was looking a little to flat all around. Your way would definitely give it more volume and definition. I will update this when I get an opportunity. Nice to have other ideas.
Karsten Hammer Hansen
I don't know what program you are using but usually I do stuff like that with shag hair/fur in 3DS max. Cheers, Karsten
Buffalo Bills
Karsten, Well that would be a good suggestion and I would like to try it, but I use 3D Studio Viz 4 and I haven't found anything that would even come close to creating something like in the program. I'm not even sure if they have plug-ins for that type of thing. But I appreciate your suggestions.
mbr
I am just starting to play with Final Render's displacement and it looks pretty powerful. Not that you'd want to spend $800 for a little displacement, but it could potentially add a lot to the roof. Just a thought.
Buffalo Bills
Hey mbr, Well the new place I'll will be working at I believe has final render so I might be able to try that. But for this project I'll just have to do with what I have. Thanks!
