robertveber
Hi all, I have a dilemma about choosing the video card for my pc. The configuration of the pc is: i7-4770 3.4 GHz, 16 gb RAM 1600 MHz, 250 GB SSD. I want to use it for photorealistic rendering in 3ds Max, VRay and Lumion. I read pros about both cards, but i can't decide which would fit my needs better. Thanks, Robert
RyderSK
[sometimes I click "Go advanced" instead of "Post reply" and I loose such long messages....like damn it, idiotic system, or maybe I am blind idiot....but.....duh] Ah, well anyway....in super shortened version, I know Dimitris will write the full-lenght maybe and you will get hence few opinions: Proper question would look like this instead: 'Viewport performance' for '3dsMax 20xx' / Vray 'RT GPU' / Lumion. Makes a big difference. Clearcut answer to that would 780 6GB. No energy to write the rest, but this is it.
robertveber
Thanks for the fast answer. I would specify the 3ds Max i want to use: 3ds Max Design 2014. Regarding the 780 6GB, my proposed video card is the 780 Ti 3 GB. With the 3GB model, it's still the GTX vs the quadro ?
Dimitris Tolios
Long winded post on this matter cannot continue! The Quadro niche is diminishing with most applications, and 3DS was one of the 1st to work great with GTX - has been the case for at least 2-3 versions. Many claim that with very-high-poly scenes, Quadros maintain an advantage, but that many 100s of millions of polygons are simply outside my interest atm, and if I ever get to something like that, I would be using layers and/or proxies to simplify what I see on screen anyways. Within this context (which is important), the perceivable viewport performance you will get with a 780Ti, will be available to a 780. If you plan on using some progressive renderer, I would consider the 6GB version that has been announced. Otherwise, the 3GB ones should be enough for pretty much anything viewport-wise. Even with 4K monitors. In my office atm I am using Revit 2014 daily, which I suspect utilizes a similar (tho far more CPU bound) viewport degradation approach with 3DS. I cannot really spot a viewport performance difference between systems that use K4000 and GTX660. Btw, out IT dept doesn't really care about my input.
