Merging geometry when importing a scene from Revit to 3DSMax

I hope this is the right place, maybe I should have move the post to some general section...

Anyway, I'm not a Revit user and , basically, I need it only when importing rvt files for further use in 3DSMAx.

Now, my problem is that I often get complex buildings with lots of details as separate objects (e.g. windows). This is usually a disaster for Max, especially when adding additional details afterwards - props, plants, landscaping... A scene can become obese, laggy and sometimes almost unmanageable.

I would like to know if there is a way to merge (combine) Revit elements into single objects,

grouping them, let's say, by name or material, prior to export. This would make a scene much more easy to work with. I tried using tha workflow thingy but didn't get the result I need.

Any suggestions?

If you use the FBX link or whatever it is called there are presets that allow you to combine by several options (material, category, etc.). I personally hate it and have everything come in separately because it is so much easier to edit geometry that way. If the problem is just trying to select stuff why not just put all the revit stuff on a layer so you can easily turn it on/off and freeze it once you have edited anything you need?
