Render to texture - normal map problem

I've never made normal maps using 3ds max before so I thought I would give it a try. I've created my low poly object (a plane) and my high poly object (a plane with some spheres through it). I select my low poly object and go to render to texture. I choose projection map and select the high poly object. Select normal map as output and the rendered image looks to be a very tightly cropped version of the entire object (see attachments).

 

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong?
