Coolhand78
Hi all, looking to build a new machine as my main workstation, and am wondering which monitors you would recommend...? I need 2 and am looking at 24" options... I'm am very naive when it comes to the hardcore technical side of things, however, i do calibrate my monitors with a spyder 3, as colour correctness is an important factor... not the most important (thats price) but it's lets say 30% a factor in the decision... Morne Erasmus
Hi Luke I highly recommend the Dell U2412. Great value and they are very affordable. If you have the cash however, go for the 27 inch version - Dell U2713 (they a bit more pricey) I don't think the 4K monitors is mainstream enough yet to make it affordable and also a lot of applications isn't optimised yet for that extra desktop real estate

Morne Erasmus
I think the U2414 is the newer version of the U2412, but you'll have to confirm that. The U2412 is 1920 X 1200 (the extra 120 pixels makes a difference) the U2414 is only 1920 X 1080
alessandro.eu
I'm also looking for a new monitor to put side by side with my old one (27'') I saw Dell U3014 (quite big 30") or U2713H (27") anyone has experience with NEC/EIZO/HP/ASUS?
RyderSK
My most recent monitor, Dell U3014 came absolutely perfectly calibrated, but it took me 2 full months to get used to the size :- ) [from 27]. I only wanted to write that if decide to buy some of the newer high-end panels made since 2013+, it's chance you will have wide-gamut GB-LED baclit panel, which no longer can be calibrated correctly with something like Spyder3, and some panels, like DELL, even being restricted to X-rite i1 Display Pro colorimeter, preferably with their hardware calibration tool. With that said, maybe I was lucky but all the wide-gamut Dells I bought in recent 2 years were perfect from get go. In 30", Dell U3014 is the sole king at the moment imho (talking purely display, value, but the looks...ugh, so ugly...), but in 27" the best monitor at the moment is ASUS PA279Q (looks bit oddly too, like gaming monitor, but don't be fooled ). Recent very good alternative to U3014 surfaced in HP Z Display Z30i 30", same high price tag as the Dell, much nicer look imho, from TFT review I would say the Dell is still a bit better choice. Budget scenario is Dell U2713H or ASUS PB278Q, each having few quirks for already decently high price-tag, but are both considerably cheaper than the above. I would not, under any circumstance even consider 24 right now. And wouldn't bother looking at NEC/EIZO line-up when the top-of-line conventional brands now offered absolutely superior products with zero drawbacks. I mean it, just read the TFT reviews
alessandro.eu
yes my doubt is that a 30" may be too big, do you use two monitors (27"+30")? As I already have a 27" probably is wise to get another 27"...
RyderSK
My problem with the size od 30" is maybe not so much the width, but the height. 16:10 proportions were amazing for 24", but here it looks just...awkward. Even the 31.5" Dell 4K Ultrasharp is same height, but wider, which seems more natural. Regarding the size next to it, I had to give the 27" to Veronika and I now use 30+24. It's still grotesquely far away :- D so I use the second display less and less... Once I buy the 32", I think I will give up on 2 display setup forever. Nic H
iv got 2 x 27" dells right now but i *personally* would prefer 2 x 24 at a higher res like these http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Monitors/23-24_inch/53684-UP2414Q?gclid=CKa17NfhmL4CFVckvQodKgoASw iv not calibrated my dells and they have been good out of the box with hardware profiling. alessandro.eu
I'm getting old and such resolution I think will make things too small on the screen, like icons and panels which graphic card supports such resolution?
numerobis
I'm using a 27" NEC PA271W since 3.5 years now. Hardware calibrated with a x-rite sensor optimized by NEC for their monitors (MDSVSENSOR) Works good so far, but i'm planning for a 32" 4K display now - but it needs to be calibratable and 60Hz... and i hope to see something below 1500€. RyderSK
but it needs to be calibratable and 60Hz. All the current IGZO 4K panels are 60Hz, just not using HDMI but DisplayPort, but is that much of a problem ? I see it being brought up in every discussion but not sure what to make out of it. Only drawback it's tiled display, so, but, again, seems to work as should with very rare exceptions. Just the price...but local street price for Dell UP3214Q is already 1900-2050 euros here, which is quite nice imho, but still a lot of course. We'll see,... Dimitris Tolios
I've messed with a 31.5" 4K, but I don't own one. It is impressive. I don't think I really like the size. Too big to have it next to another one, as Juraj said feels "too far". Either "solo" 32", or maybe a portrait mounted 19~21" that will be roughly same height would work better if all you need it for is reference material. Or start getting used to the idea a cintiq? (the devil) But I don't think UIs are ready for 4K, and most ppl will have issues with a 4K 24", where everything non-scalable will be terribly small. I think it will take at least a couple of years, and perhaps Win9 (i.e. next gen OSs and Apps alike) for us to have access to 4K aware UIs. At home I have 1440p 27 + 1080p 24"...too wide-spread already for my likes. Similarly @ the office 27+24. Tempted to swap the secondary screen with an ancient 4:3 19" 1024p @ portrait mode our IT dept has.
SkylineArch
Hahaha, you guys are talking 30" monitors, I wish they made a good 15.6" to work along side my laptop. you have to get to 24" to get anything decent. I just don't have the space for a larger monitor(s), and don't want to buy a docking station and hide my laptop since one of the main reasons I got it (Dell XPS15) was for the screen. I wish the portable USB monitors worked with Max, I just want a second monitor for CAD, or Photoshop Browse (Bridge), toolbars, etc.
RyderSK
ancient 4:3 19" 1024p @ portrait mode our IT dept has. I had few of these, 19" 4:3 Fujitsu-Siemens, PVA panels, 1280*1024px, those were great side panels, sadly they eventually died one by one, still, some of those served 10 years :- ) or maybe a portrait mounted 19~21" Almost impossible to get good one of those. Now Cintiq + 32"4k, that's something.
