PC-over-IP - Has anyone tried it?

Recommended Posts

Our Revit users in remote offices work on servers in our main office over remote desktop. They don't like it but they like it better than trying to save files back to our main server from their remote locations.

I've used remote desktop over the internet (not LAN) to work on my PC in 3ds Max. It is doable, to make a quick fix or something small but I couldn't work on it every day.

One thing to note with the remote desktop protocol for winodws 7, the graphics card is bypassed and all screen processing is done in software. If you want GPU acceleration over a remote desktop system you'll have to access a windows server install or possibly try one of the other remote protocols.

Personally, I would assume that your IT guy is suggesting a solution which is good for him first and you second (if at all).

I just use the GoToMyPC service, it works fairly well. Usually I use it to get a file I forgot or to send work to render on my studio workstation while I'm also working somewhere else on my laptop. It costs me US$10/month for one machine, that sounds like a lot until I get to a client's office and realize I have an older version of a work file, and it's either re-build, go back or just log-in to retrieve the right one.
