Tim Nelson
I regularly have jobs where I need to import thousands of STL files into Max. Fortunately I have a script that can do it automatically but the problem is that you cannot change the default import options. That means that it's going to weld all vertices, auto-smooth, remove double faces, and unify normals. I don't want or need all of these options and it increases import times dramatically. So I'm wondering if anyone knows how to change the default options for this. Is there an INI file or anything else that these are stored in or is it much more complicated than that? Tim Nelson
http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/batchimportstl Maybe that will work. Nice, I hadn't seen that script, I'll give it a shot and report back. Thank you!
Tim Nelson
Unfortunately it doesn't appear to work as advertised. Even if I import one file manually to change the settings, it still reverts back to default settings when I use the script. Looks like the script has not been updated in years so maybe something in the way Max imports has changed since then.
Tim Nelson
This is the script that I have been using btw. http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/batch-loader The same thing happens, on auto all settings go to default. If auto is unchecked my custom import settings will stick, but the problem is I have to hit a button or two for every item I import. A good recipe for tendonitis but still may be better than waiting for the auto mode to import.
Zdravko Barisic
Maybe, here http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=98 You could find the answer. Perhaps, there was a "a maxscript wish" thread, but I can not find it right now. Hope it helped at least some.
Tim Nelson
I think I've found an acceptable compromise for now. I sort all the files by size, everything under 1mb I move to a separate folder and import those using the "auto" setting. Those make up the majority of the files, and Max seems to import those pretty quickly on default settings. Any files larger and I import them manually with the script, using the simpler settings. Saves me a lot of mouse clicks this way and still goes pretty fast.
