joshduncan
Studio/Institution: noneClient: personalGenre: Residential ExteriorSoftware: SketchUp, 3DS Max, Corona A6Website: http://thevisualworkshop.comDescription: Just starting a project to recreate this image as closely as possible (maybe minus some of the film grain) of Colin Lucas's Canada Estate in Rotherhithe, London. Awesome high rise residential building from the 60's that are repeated around South London. No sections or elevations online so working by eye from photo references. Starting the modelling of it in SketchUP using components for the two different kind of floors. This way i can progressively add detail and the whole building will be generated with the 20 or so instanced floors. Will take it into max to refine and add environment once enough detail is added in SketchUp. Some reference photos and WIP in sketchup: Edited June 2, 2014 by joshduncan

Tommy L
I think you need Rodney, Delboy, Grandad and the 3 wheeler parked in front.

joshduncan
getting there. Almost done in sketchup. Materials done for grouping and easy selection in Max : Edited June 3, 2014 by joshduncan
Nic H
you should take the plunge and model it in max like a real 3D artist
joshduncan
Whole scene besides main building will be done in max. Modelling the building made sense in Sketchup. Everything at right angles and the same. Much more efficient with Sketchup snaps etc (for me anyhow).
joshduncan
Starting to mass out some of the environment. Cant seem to get the right focal length or FOV at the moment. Will worry about that later.
Ernest Burden III
you should take the plunge and model it in max like a real 3D artist Ouch! But funny as hell Cant seem to get the right focal length or FOV at the moment. Will worry about that later. Move back a fair amount That photo looks like something my father would have rendered. It is well composed and graphic, really nice inspiration image.
joshduncan
Starting to texture the building. Some edges still a bit sharp, though. Now to model up a bunch of curtains. Edited June 4, 2014 by joshduncan
joshduncan
Lots of repetition and some mapping to fix but from a distance should be starting to look acceptable. Edited June 4, 2014 by joshduncan
Tommy L
Nice and grim. Im thinking more Michael Caine than David Jason. Im glad to see youre doing it in color, I thought B/W was cheating a bit.
heni30
...........more James Mason (these guys gotta stop while they're ahead to maintain their legacy; O'toole was pathetic towards the end) Edited June 4, 2014 by heni30
joshduncan
Trying to add in some brick weathering. Using coronaAO map inverted with noise map as the radius. (same as VrayDirt). accidentally added 4 too many floors in that last image. Edited June 5, 2014 by joshduncan
Francisco Penaloza
you should take the plunge and model it in max like a real 3D artist Actually the software does not make a real 3D artist, the software is just a tool. Good work so far Josh, it is a very stunning image in deed, look forward to see your progress on this one.
joshduncan
Slowly getting some of the scene done with the main building file referenced in. Working from google street view proving quite difficult. Buildings to the left at the wrong scale.

joshduncan
Only arroway one is the very base floor walls of the tower. The map on all exposed floor slabs is a map made in PS from cgtextures. I Will create a few variations of it to help with the tiling soon.
joshduncan
Anyone know where i could find a half decent 60's model car for free? Also, thinking about using a simple zdepth fog trick to recreate those hazed background buildings. It doesn't seem to be a very complex fog with any volumetric light so should be okay. Thoughts? Ernest Burden III
Fog or just lowering the contrast in Photoshop or via materials. One of those buildings is a ship.
joshduncan
Fog or just lowering the contrast in Photoshop or via materials. One of those buildings is a ship. Lowering contrast with a zdepth mask might work. Using corona so there is no environmental fog.

rjohnson33
I was just reading this thread and really like the subject you've chosen when I realised that this tower (well, an identical version of) features in a backplate from an interior I worked on earlier this year! It's the pair on the Somerset Estate further up on the river. Anyway, I don't think you'll get any detail out of the attached over and above the references you already have but just out of interest - this is how the same buildings on the Somerset Estate are looking nowadays from across the river. Looking forward to seeing how your images work out.
