jefftreitz
I'm about to buy a new laptop and am wondering about what everyone is doing for anti-virus? My current laptop has Trend and I haven't had any problems so I guess it is working fine. I have the option through Xotic pc to get Trend again for $35 for two years which I'm aware is not a lot. So what are you all using? I've read good things about Avast, Avira for the free route. I don't want something that is going to bog my system down like I've heard that something like Norton does. What are your thoughts?
RyderSK
Microsoft Security essentials :- ) I vary between nothing and Nod32 depending on which HW and how I use it and how I care. But generally, for WS, nothing. I am pretty cautious and often try to use critical thinking when accessing internet instead. Never ever had a single problem in years. http://www.eset.com/us/ Not because they are from Slovakia and reside next to me but they are like the very best there is, and have been for quite some time. And don't need to buy reviews ;- ) [ehm...bitdefender..symantec......]
joelmcwilliam
Like Juraj said, for a ws only, nothing, if you're cautious. But if you like to experiment a lot with software or do things on your pc of which you know you might catch a virus next to being you're computer used as a ws, have also a look at alternatives for anti virus software. I personally use deepfreeze, but this is only because I personally like it. I like the simplicity and the fact that everything is fixed, so no worry's. You can also look at Reboot Restore RX, Steadier state. Anti virus annoys me, mainly because it wants to connect to the net and update. But probably no big deal for others. Have a look and a try and see what fits you.
SkylineArch
I have AVG free installed, update it a couple times a year manually but do not have it running. It's only installed incase I think I have a virus because some stop you from installing anti-virus software. I haven't had a virus in a long time, just know what you are clicking and installing and you should be fine.
blank...
Avast + Malwarebytes, both have small hardware demands and both work well.
jasonstewart
Avast + Malwarebytes, both have small hardware demands and both work well. That is the combo I have on all my computers WS or otherwise.

I had it installed on a netbook that had a 4GB ssd and 2GB of RAM and noticed no performance hit. An interesting article I read recently regarding anti-malware reviews: Hal2020.com

notamondayfan
Microsoft Security essentials :- ) What's wrong with Microsoft Security? Granted that little talking paperclip is annoying when it constantly asks me to type my credit card details in, no matter how many cards I use :-S
