Extrusions coming out of gravel material

Hi All,

 

I'm new to the forum and have tried a couple searches to no avail - figured I would give posting a try here.

 

I'm somewhat new to Vray and trying to improve my skills (currently studying M.Arch). For some reason when I applied a loose rock material to a surface it has started giving me what look like stalagmites (stalagtites? whatever ones point up). I'm not exactly sure what the problem is, I tried a couple troubleshoots but couldn't figure it out. If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated. (image attached).

 

Its Vray 2.0 for Rhino. The material was downloaded from here, top left:
